Position: Academic Advisor I - Senior Academic Advisor II AS7060

About This Position

The Ferguson College of Agriculture is looking for Academic Advisors to join a new team at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK. The advisor will guide undergraduate students through their academic journeys, connecting them with resources they need to succeed and fostering a student‑focused culture that achieves student success goals.

Responsibilities
  • Advises students about program inquiries, academic plans and progress, academic schedule, choice of major, and other academic activities and career goals.
  • Proactively reaches out to students in various situations to offer support and help them make decisions regarding personal educational goals leading to graduation.
  • Assists students in making decisions concerning academic plans and career goals.
  • Participates in professional development activities, including on‑campus and off‑campus workshops, webinars, and conferences.
  • Serves on university committees as needed.
  • May teach up to two sections of UNIV 1111 (Freshman Seminar).
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (must be conferred on or before the start date).
  • Starting salary based upon education and prior relevant work experience.
  • Academic Adviser I:
    Bachelor’s degree and 0‑2 years of experience in a comparable position.
  • Academic Adviser II:
    Bachelor’s degree and 2‑3 years of experience in a comparable position. May teach up to two sections of UNIV 1111.
  • Academic Adviser III:
    Bachelor’s degree and 3‑5 years of experience in a comparable position. May teach up to two sections of UNIV 1111.
  • Senior Academic Adviser I:
    Bachelor’s degree and 5‑7 years of experience in a comparable position. May teach up to two sections of UNIV 1111.
  • Senior Academic Adviser II:
    Bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of experience in a comparable position, with additional administrative experience such as unit‐program responsibility, student‑group supervision, and special‑project coordination. May teach up to two sections of UNIV 1111.
  • Knowledge and technical skills:
    Ability to maintain accurate, confidential student records; learn information and data‑management systems quickly; apply university advising technologies and student information systems.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills:
    Excellent written and verbal communication, customer‑service skills, ability to build rapport with students, faculty, and staff, and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Advising and student‑support skills:
    Commitment to inclusive and responsive advising practices; ability to identify and support at‑risk students with proactive outreach, referrals, and follow‑up.
  • Analytical and problem‑solving skills:
    Ability to assess student needs, interpret academic data, and identify appropriate interventions or resources.
  • Organizational and professional skills:
    Excellent organizational and time‑management skills, proactive attitude, independence, and sound judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree, preferably in agriculture or natural resources.
  • Minimum two years of advising experience or higher‑education experience.
  • Knowledge of academic programs, degree requirements, curricula, and course prerequisites, including interpretation of academic records and placement information.
  • Understanding of university academic policies, procedures, and regulations related to graduation, enrollment, and transfer credit.
  • Proficiency with advising technologies and student information systems; use of data to track student progress and inform advising decisions.
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience with high school or college students.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and troubleshooting skills for addressing academic issues, evaluating petitions, and supporting decision making.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with advising and higher‑education best practices.
