Overview
The Imaging Sonographer will perform diagnostic imaging on animals of all species with a focus on compassionate, safe, and effective patient care. The primary responsibility will be performing abdominal and cardiac ultrasound studies on animals. The sonographer will teach veterinary students proper image acquisition and patient positioning, while modeling best practices in accordance with ALARA and university policies. Call is not currently required but may be added as the service expands.
Emergency duty requires being available on-site within 1 hour 30 minutes when on call. Promotional opportunities may be available through the established career development plan.
- Perform abdominal and cardiac ultrasound studies on animals; document completed studies and maintain accurate records.
- Perform routine quality control for imaging modalities.
- Provide ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirates (FNA) as ordered by a veterinarian, including patient positioning, image optimization, and preparing samples for diagnostic evaluation.
- Teach veterinary students proper image acquisition and patient positioning for routine, special, and emergency procedures; model best practices in accordance with ALARA and university policies.
- Maintain stock and cleanliness of assigned rooms; perform minor administrative tasks.
- Note on on-call: call is not currently required; potential for call as service expands. Emergency duty requires being available on-site within 1 hour 30 minutes when on call.
- DI Tech I:
Associate s DI Tech I - Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) with two years of diagnostic imaging experience; or radiological Technologist (ARRT) or Sonographer (ARD MS). - DI Tech II: RVT with four years of diagnostic imaging experience; or radiological Technologist (ARRT) or Sonographer (ARDMS) with two years of diagnostic imaging experience.
- DI Tech III: RVT with six years of diagnostic imaging experience; or radiological Technologist (ARRT) or Sonographer (ARDMS) with four years of diagnostic imaging experience.
- DI Specialist: RVT with eight years of diagnostic imaging experience; or radiological Technologist (ARRT) or Sonographer (ARDMS) with six years of diagnostic imaging experience.
- Degree must be conferred on or before agreed start date.
- Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:
- Ability to perform routine diagnostic imaging studies focused in Ultrasound; animal handling skills and willingness to learn; comfortable working with animals.
- Experience or training in radiography, CT, MRI, and/or Nuclear Medicine is desirable but not required. Training will be provided for other modalities.
- Ability to maneuver around imaging tables and equipment; comfortable with Windows-based computer applications.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate s or Bachelor s degree or Associate’s degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
- 2–10 years of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.
- Strong abdominal ultrasound experience with cardiac ultrasound experience.
- Certifications/Registrations: ARDMS or ARRT depending on role emphasis.
- Other:
- Proficiency in teaching abdominal and cardiac ultrasound; willingness to learn and assist with X-Ray, CT, MRI with training provided as needed.
- Ability to lift animals up to 100–120 pounds; comfort working with animals in a clinical setting.

Monday through Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm with occasional evenings.
Appointment Length:
Regular Continuous/Until Further Notice.
Hiring Range: $21.25–$36.75 per hour.
