Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering seeks an Instrument Shop Technician for its Research Laboratory. The BAE laboratory supports faculty, staff, and students on research and development projects across the department and campus and assists mechanical shops with miscellaneous fabrication tasks to further the university’s mission.
Responsibilities- Perform milling, lathe work, welding, and sheet fabrication using steel, stainless steel, brass, and aluminum.
- Fabricate prototypes with wood, plastic, 3D printing, and electronic/pneumatic integration.
- Use metalworking machines and tools to construct new machine components and repair defective ones.
- Conduct assigned duties related to operations, maintenance, and renovations of buildings and equipment, including preventive maintenance, light carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, and other repairs.
- Respond to urgent work requests as needed.
- Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves, safety glasses, etc.) is mandatory.
- Stand, bend, stoop, lift up to 50 lbs frequently, and lift more than 50 lbs occasionally.
- High School diploma or GED (conferred on or before the agreed start date).
- Minimum five (5) years of machine shop experience in machining and/or fabricating machine components.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Proficiency in machine‑tool operation, milling and lathe setup, dividing head and rotary‑table use, welding layout, and fabrication equipment operation.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Vocational or technical training in machining, welding, metal fabrication, or a related field.
- Forklift operation, electrical experience, CAD proficiency, and customer‑relations experience.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering is a unique department that straddles the Ferguson College of Agriculture and the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology. It promotes the profitability and sustainability of agricultural and biological products and oversees the conservation and management of natural resources through education, research, and outreach. Graduate programs include PhD and MS degrees; undergraduate programs include BS, accredited Biosystems Engineering, and BS Agricultural Systems Technology.
