Monday‑Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with overtime and a weekly on‑call rotation that includes after‑hours, weekends, and holidays.
Appointment Length:
Regular Continuous / Until Further Notice.
Hiring Range: $16.00 – $25.00 per hour.
About This Position
The College of Veterinary Medicine is growing, improving, and preparing for an exciting future. Maintaining reliable facilities and equipment is critical to support students, faculty, clinicians, patients, and animal care. This position plays an important role in maintaining and improving older facilities, as well as supporting a new state‑of‑the‑art Teaching Hospital upon completion.
Responsibilities
- Welding, fabrication, mechanical repairs, and general building maintenance for the College of Veterinary Medicine facilities and equipment.
- Fabricate, repair, and modify animal pens, cages, stalls, chutes, gates, carts, and special medical devices such as splints, braces, and shoes as directed by clinicians.
- Perform routine building and equipment repairs including minor plumbing, electrical, hydraulic, carpentry, flooring, ceiling, wall, and overhead door repairs.
- Maintain shop equipment, tools, vehicles, forklifts, compressed medical gas systems, and preventative maintenance records.
- Assist with moving furniture and equipment, setting up for special events, picking up and delivering parts or supplies, unloading animal food, and snow and ice removal.
- Participate in the on‑call rotation, with each on‑call period lasting one week.
- Respond to maintenance needs, projects, and emergencies as required.
Physical and Safety Requirements
Work may involve exposure to welding equipment, power tools, electricity, steam, compressed gases, machinery, animals, heavy loads, noise, dust, and animal waste. Must use appropriate personal protective equipment and be able to work in cramped spaces, on ladders, and around animals. Must be able to lift and manipulate loads in excess of 75 pounds, and stand, walk, bend, crawl, stoop, and work below and above waist level for extended periods.
Must have a valid driver’s license. Must obtain a Forklift/Lift Truck Operator Safety Certificate after hire.
Must be eligible for employment in areas governed by the U.S. Patriot Act and the Public Health and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002, 42 CFR 73, 7 CFR 331, and 9 CFR 121. Must successfully complete a DOJ/FBI security risk assessment and background check.
Required Qualifications
- High School/GED (degree conferred on or before the agreed‑upon start date).
- BMM I:
Two years of prior successful work experience in a building trade; and/or the equivalent of 600 hours vocational/technical education in a related building trade field. - BMM II:
Three years of prior successful work experience in a building trade; and/or the equivalent of 600 hours vocational/technical education in a related building trade field plus one year of prior experience in a building trade. - BMM III:
Four years of prior successful work experience in a building trade; and/or the equivalent of 600 hours vocational/technical education in a related building trade field plus two years of prior experience in a building trade. Candidate placement depends on years of experience and availability. - Valid driver’s license.
- Valid Forklift/Lift Truck Operator Safety Certificate after hire.
- Apprentice license in mechanical, electrical, or plumbing (required for Building Maintenance Mechanic III).
- Must be eligible for employment under the U.S. Patriot Act and related federal regulations; must complete DOJ/FBI security assessment and background check.
