Position Details

The Geologist III is a professional scientific position responsible for leading, designing and implementing multi-year, field-based regional surficial sampling programs in Newfoundland and Labrador. The position is responsible for interpreting newly acquired and historical surficial geochemical and indicator mineral data, including the compilation, levelling, and reanalysis of archived surficial geochemical and mineralogical datasets, and for developing, training, validating, and documenting machine-learning models to delineate areas of interest and integrate results into GIS-based geoscience databases.
Duties include:
designing and overseeing surficial sediment and indicator mineral sampling programs; developing and implementing optimized analytical and processing workflows for surficial media; providing oversight of analytical mineralogy and geochemistry workflows (e.g., SEM, EMPA, LA-ICP-MS), including data reduction and quality control; preparation of geochemical maps, peer-reviewed scientific publications, authoritative scientific reports; ensuring that all work is performed in accordance with health and safety standards and applicable government workplace policies and directives, and other related duties.
Screening Criteria
Completion of a Master of Science or a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Earth Sciences or Geology (equivalencies will be considered)
Experience in leading, designing and implementing multi-year, regional surficial sampling programs in glaciated (or non-glaciated) terrains.
Experience publishing (peer-reviewed) results of surficial (geological, geochemical and mineralogical) research.
Experience in interpreting surficial geochemical data, applying machine learning techniques to regional data sets (e.g., unsupervised or supervised classification), including documentation of methods and outputs, levelling historical- and newly-acquired data and incorporating geochemical datasets into GIS applications.
Experience sampling surficial sediments for indicator mineral processing; experience incorporating analytical techniques in mineralogy (SEM, EMPA, and/or LA-ICP-MS analyses), including data reduction and quality control.
Experience in analytical geochemistry
Proficiency in ArcGIS (asset)
Proficiency in IoGAS™ and other geochemistry software (asset)
Assessment Criteria
Knowledge of best practices in surficial sampling for geochemistry and indicator minerals in glaciated (or non-glaciated) terrains
Knowledge of multi-variate advanced statistical and machine learning techniques as applicable to regional, non-levelled, geochemical datasets.
Knowledge of analytical techniques in geochemistry and mineralogy
Knowledge of surficial (Quaternary) geology and mineral potential of Newfoundland and Labrador (asset)
Ability to think critically and communicate effectively
Ability to work independently
Ability to manage time and tasks
Data analysis skills
Relationship Building
