IntroductionThis examination is being given to fill several vacancies for the San Joaquin County Public Works Roads and Flood Channel Maintenance Divisions. This recruitment will establish an eligible list which may be used to fill future vacancies throughout the county. This recruitment may also be used to fill part‑time opportunities.

Potential new hires into this classification are required to successfully pass a pre‑employment physical examination, a pre‑employment drug screen and a background investigation as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made unless the eligible candidate has passed the drug screen, physical and successfully completed the background process. TYPICAL DUTIES- Performs routine maintenance work on highways and flood control channels; assists in repairing roadway and flood control facilities. Applies road and levee construction and maintenance materials; may do minor concrete work; loads trucks with construction materials.
- Assists in installing and maintaining traffic signs, pavement legends and symbols, and reflective pavement markers; learns to fabricate simple traffic signs.
- Sprays weeds along roads, levees, channels, creeks and sloughs; cleans and clears roadways, basins, culverts, streams and drainage ditches of brush and debris; hauls debris to disposal sites; digs ditches; lays pipes; repairs fences and gates; may act as laborer on tree crews.
- Assists with the operation of highway paint striping equipment, or with paint delivery systems and accessory equipment in the placement of legends and markings on County roads.
- Installs construction signs and barricades; serves as flagger for construction, maintenance and traffic operations.
- May operate a variety of road and channel construction and maintenance equipment, including light single axle dump trucks, jackhammers, chisels, torches, compressor and air-activated tools, and other related equipment.
License: Possession of a valid California driver's license.
Special Requirement: Incumbents must obtain a Class B California driver’s license with tanker and airbrake endorsements prior to completion of the probationary period. Failure to obtain and maintain a Class B license with endorsements shall result in release from employment. The Class B requirement is waived for employees who were in the class prior to March 12, 2008.
