Assistant Engineer – Municipal Utilities Department (MUD)

Under the general supervision of a Senior or Associate Civil Engineer, the Assistant Engineer will be responsible for a variety of engineering assignments associated with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of municipal utility facilities and public works projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with planning, design, and construction of utility and public works projects.
  • Prepare engineering studies, reports, plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Review engineering calculations and technical documents.
  • Coordinate with consultants, contractors, regulatory agencies, and City staff.
  • Conduct field inspections and evaluate project progress.
  • Support the delivery of critical water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure improvements.
Qualifications
  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four‑year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a closely related field, or a valid California registration as a Licensed Land Surveyor.
  • At least two (2) years of engineering experience in design, development review, construction, or traffic planning or operations.
  • Knowledge of distribution and treatment of drinking water, sanitary sewer systems, stormwater systems, engineering design, construction management practices, and public infrastructure planning and development.
  • Knowledge of sewer pump stations, water treatment plants, and wastewater treatment plant processes is highly desirable.
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions and ability to lift and carry equipment up to 60 pounds.
Work Schedule

The position offers a flexible 9/80 work schedule:
Monday–Thursday nine‑hour days, alternating Friday 8‑hour days with every other Friday off.

Additional Information

This role is exempt under FLSA status and is subject to the City of Stockton’s Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) annual filing requirements.
