The Sanitation Worker is responsible for thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing all production equipment and facility infrastructure in a food manufacturing environment. This role ensures strict adherence to food safety, sanitation, and safety procedures while using designated personal protective equipment and handling sanitation chemicals and cleaning equipment correctly. The position involves disassembling and reassembling plant equipment, protecting sensitive components during cleaning, and supporting overall janitorial and general labor tasks as needed.
Responsibilities- Perform all cleaning tasks in accordance with established Safety and Food Safety Standards.
- Participate in safety training programs and actively contribute to safety initiatives that promote a strong culture of safety.
- Ensure full compliance with regulatory and third-party requirements, including SQF, GMP, HACCP, OSHA, Food Safety, Food Fraud/Defense, Allergens, Organic, and Gluten Free standards.
- Learn and apply proper cleaning procedures for different types of machinery, including understanding and using the correct chemicals for each application.
- Rotate cleaning areas on a daily basis to maintain consistent sanitation across the facility.
- Cover all electronic devices and control panels with plastic prior to performing wet cleaning in production areas to prevent damage.
- Use air nozzles in designated areas while consistently wearing required PPE such as ear protection and bump cap.
- Use water nozzles in designated areas while consistently wearing required PPE including apron, boots, and bump cap.
- Inspect machinery and equipment after cleaning to verify that all surfaces are completely clean and that all parts are properly reassembled.
- Store all cleaning equipment and tools in their designated locations and ensure they are not left in unauthorized areas.
- Follow proper Lock Out/Tag Out procedures, ensuring mixers and corn and flour machines are completely turned off and secured with safety locks before cleaning.
- Work collaboratively as part of a team to clean any type of machinery as required by production and sanitation schedules.
- Correctly weigh all waste generated by machines to obtain accurate totals and ensure waste records are precise.
- Report any safety hazards to the supervisor, including open electrical boxes, loose cables or wires, or any condition that could cause an accident.
- Use ladders or scissor lifts only when trained and authorized, and never climb on top of machinery to perform cleaning.
- Label all chemicals in secondary containers according to OSHA GHS procedures.
- Operate trash and recycling machines safely and notify the supervisor when they reach maximum capacity.
- Wear designated Personal Protective Equipment at all times, including safety goggles, hairnets, apron, and boots when working in the washroom.
- Assist with janitorial duties as needed, including cleaning restrooms, office areas, and general company premises.
- Operate cleaning equipment and sanitation tools in a safe and efficient manner, protecting sensitive equipment from damage during the sanitation process.
- Perform general labor tasks such as sweeping, sanitizing, custodial work, and supporting food production and packaging areas as required.
- Drive and operate forklifts and other industrial equipment as required for sanitation and material handling activities.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping throughout the production and facility areas.
- Adhere to company attendance and punctuality policies and maintain reliability and schedule flexibility, including working weekends, holidays, and off-shifts as needed.
- Comply with all food safety policies and third-party certification requirements at all times.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support sanitation, production, and facility maintenance.
- Grade school education;
High School Diploma or GED is a plus. - 1-2 years of experience working in food manufacturing or similar industries.
