Stockton, California

TYPICAL DUTIES
  • Elicit, record, and review medical histories and perform acute primary care examinations on patients ranging from newborn through geriatric, utilizing the problem‑oriented medical record or other appropriate systems; provide general and specific health instruction.
  • Coordinate individual and family health management, utilizing physician resources or community agencies; provide guidance, instruction, treatment, and referral in areas such as family planning, sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS, drug abuse, child care, and hygiene.
  • Perform early diagnostic examinations including vision, hearing, pap smears, and other exams; may order laboratory tests, x‑rays, electrocardiograms, and other diagnostic tests; may collect specimens, perform, and interpret selected laboratory tests and take action on abnormalities as necessary; provide immunizations and injections.
  • Identify basic to complex medical conditions; determine if patient’s medical, surgical, or psychiatric problems require immediate physician consultation; treat conditions and manage stable phases of chronic illnesses on consultation with or following specific protocols; dispense and/or administer medication when indicated; alert appropriate personnel of potential community health problems.
  • Provide routine prenatal care and post‑partum follow‑up; conduct newborn and well‑child examinations; provide comprehensive health screening assessments; treat pediatric illnesses.
  • Observe and evaluate patients’ emotional condition; counsel and support patients in psychosocial areas; provide emergency treatment or referral for patients with severe emotional upset.
  • May work in hospital, outpatient, custodial, public health, satellite, or mobile settings; may conduct home and school visits; may lead ancillary clinic staff; may coordinate clinic activities; may orient and supervise nursing and medical students and other providers.
  • Ensure quality assurance through review and audit of clinic charts to assure adequate medical management and follow‑up; provide consultation to other providers.
  • Maintain accurate records and complete required forms and questionnaires.
  • Attend meetings and workshops; serve on committees as assigned; provide consultation and assistance in specialty areas; participate in and conduct in‑service training.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge

The general procedures, techniques, and equipment used in family medicine, community health, mental health, and professional nursing; medical terminology; hospital and clinic routines, equipment, and facilities; full range of medical conditions of applicable specialty including procedures utilized in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment; maternal and child health practices; basic laboratory procedures; use, effects, problems, and treatment of abuse of medicines and narcotics;

social, public, mental, and other community treatment agencies; principles of human behavior, basic causes, symptoms, and treatment of mental illness and instability; basic medical record keeping; diverse needs of cultural groups; principles and practices of communicable disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
