Director Of Merchandise

The Director of Merchandise will lead all aspects of retail operations for the Stockton Thunder, encompassing merchandise procurement, inventory management, sales strategies, and enhancing the overall fan shopping experience. This role is crucial in driving revenue, strengthening brand presence, and ensuring fans have access to a diverse and high-quality selection of team apparel and novelties.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Merchandise Operations & Sales

  • Develop and execute comprehensive merchandise strategies to maximize sales and profitability across all retail channels, including game days, online, and special events.
  • Oversee daily retail operations, ensuring efficient setup, sales processing, and breakdown for all events.
  • Implement effective visual merchandising displays that are appealing and drive impulse purchases.
  • Analyze sales data, market trends, and fan feedback to optimize product offerings and inventory levels.
  • Manage point-of-sale (POS) systems, process transactions accurately, and handle cash reconciliation.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to all fans, resolving inquiries and ensuring a positive shopping experience.

Product Development & Procurement

  • Identify, source, and procure a diverse range of high-quality merchandise, including apparel, headwear, novelties, and fan gear.
  • Negotiate with vendors for favorable pricing, terms, and delivery schedules to optimize cost efficiency.
  • Collaborate with marketing and creative teams on merchandise design, branding, and seasonal collections.
  • Ensure all merchandise adheres to brand guidelines, league licensing requirements, and quality standards.
  • Manage the entire inventory lifecycle, from ordering and receiving to stocking, transfers, and reconciliation.

Staff Management & Training

  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise merchandise staff, part-time, and game-day personnel.
  • Conduct performance reviews, provide ongoing feedback, and foster professional development opportunities for the team.
  • Cultivate a positive, collaborative, and high-performing work environment.

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Develop and manage the annual merchandise budget, monitoring expenses and revenue targets.
  • Track sales performance against goals and implement strategies to achieve and exceed financial objectives.
  • Prepare regular sales reports, inventory analyses, and financial forecasts for senior management.

E-commerce & Digital Presence

  • Manage and optimize the organization's online merchandise store, ensuring accurate product listings, inventory, and a seamless customer experience.
  • Coordinate with the marketing team to execute online promotions, digital campaigns, and social media content to drive e-commerce sales.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Retail Management, or a related field preferred.
  • 1+ years of progressive experience in retail management, merchandise operations, or a similar role, preferably within the sports or entertainment industry.
  • Proven track record of driving sales, managing inventory effectively, and achieving financial targets.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with retail POS systems, inventory management software, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required by game schedules and special events.
  • Knowledge of sports merchandise trends, licensing, and vendor relations is a plus.
