Primary Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Director of Public Safety, performs various assignments related to the safety and security of the University of the Pacific’s San Francisco Campus. Essential Functions
  • Clinic/Visitor Entry Monitor: patient/clinic access points; activate entry for authorized individuals; respond to dispatch instructions, alarms, emergencies; provide visitor info on security and handicap parking.
  • Main Entrance Monitor: controlled access employee entrance; ensure only authorized personnel admitted; provide information to students, staff, faculty; promote building security for campus events.
  • Command Center Monitor: building entry points and activity by closed‑circuit camera; alert officers of emergencies; maintain camera systems, security radios, alarms; perform system checks on alarm, access control, communication devices as scheduled.
  • Create, replace, and activate access‑control cards for new or existing faculty, staff, and students.
  • Foot Patrol: lock/unlock doors, check secured doors, ensure proper securing; safeguard property; respond to dispatch instructions, alarms, emergencies.
  • Check building and property for safety hazards; report maintenance issues and emergency repairs.
  • Patrol interior and perimeter of campus; observe, take appropriate action, and report any unusual occurrence.
  • Provide lost and found and other support services for students, employees, and visitors.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director of Public Safety or their designee.
  • Serve as Campus Security Authority (CSA) as outlined by the Clery Act; report crimes as mandated.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of criminal law, arrest laws, search and seizure.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Outlook, etc.).
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; analyze situations accurately; provide clear instructions during emergencies; observe and report facts accurately; prepare written reports.
  • Minimum one year experience in an armed BSIS‑licensed security guard capacity.
  • Experience operating computerized security systems such as video cameras and access‑control devices.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current BSIS Security Guard Certification.
  • Current BSIS Firearms Permit.
  • Pepper spray and baton certification (or within 6 months of hire).
  • Current CPR Certification (or within 6 months of hire).
  • Position is full‑time (40 hrs/wk); shift flexibility required (evenings, weekends, holidays, emergencies).
  • Occupational exposure to blood‑borne pathogens; personal protective equipment provided to reduce or eliminate exposure to routine limited infectious agents.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times; strong interpersonal skills; collegial communication.
  • Completed BSIS Firearms Assessment; demonstrates judgment, restraint, and self‑control for firearm use.
  • Experience in educational or healthcare environments.
  • College courses in security, criminal justice, or public safety.
  • Capacity for 0.40-caliber firearm certification (if applicable).
  • Experience and sensitivity working with diverse backgrounds and cultures; demonstrated advancement of social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in work.
