the city of stockton's fleet division, public works department is looking for skilled and dedicated professionals to join our team as fleet mechanics – mechanic ii (heavy). In this journey-level role, you'll put your expertise to work maintaining and repairing a wide range of vehicles and equipment — from everyday service vehicles to heavy-duty construction and maintenance equipment that keeps our city running.

incumbents in this position are included in the civil service system, in a "for-cause" employment status, and are represented by operating engineers' local 3, trades and maintenance unit (classified/represented). This recruitment is being conducted as an open/promotional recruitment. Current full-time city of stockton employees may apply for this position as a promotional opportunity and successful candidates will be placed on a promotional list.

The appointing authority will have the option of requesting names from the promotional list or a combination of both. These lists may be used to fill future vacancies.
prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a medical examination to include drug screen and back evaluation and a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting.
this is a skilled, journey-level class capable of diagnosing, maintaining, installing, modifying, and repairing all heavy-duty construction and maintenance vehicles and equipment with minimal supervision. This class is distinguished from mechanic iii (heavy), in which incumbents act as lead employees over a group that may include mechanics i and/or ii (heavy). This class is distinguished from the light equipment mechanic class series in that it requires a valid class a california drivers license, works on equipment that may include air brakes or complex hydraulic systems, and performs work that requires welding and fabrication.
Assignments may also include fire apparatus.

education/experience: possession of a high school diploma or ged and one of the following: four (4) years of experience with the city of stockton as a mechanic i, or successful completion of a recognized four-year apprenticeship program in heavy duty truck/equipment repair, or four (4) years of experience at a heavy duty truck/equipment repair shop, at a level equivalent to the city of stockton mechanic i, or successful completion of a heavy duty truck/equipment program at an accredited college automotive program or trade school and two (2) years of experience at a level equivalent to the city of stockton mechanic i class.
