Probation Assistants support Probation Officers in programs serving adult and juvenile probationers, as well as at‑risk youth. The role may require working nights, weekends, or other non‑standard hours based on program needs.
Responsibilities- Assist probationers in maintaining school attendance, providing positive decision‑making guidance, and fostering a safe learning environment.
- Communicate with teachers, make telephone calls, and conduct home visits to monitor attendance and support academic goals.
- Participate in incentive trips and facilitate student involvement in Project 654.
- Act as a team member for the Juvenile Drug Court Program, KADAP, Family Assistance Team, and/or Crossroads Team.
- Support Probation Officers with caseload management, including preparation of monthly statistical reports for program coordinators.
- Education:
Minimum 30 semester units from an accredited college or university, preferably in administration of justice or a related social/behavioral science discipline. - License:
Valid California driver’s license. - Pre‑employment requirements:
Successful completion of a drug screening and background investigation.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including grammar, syntax, and composition.
- Understanding of interviewing techniques, logical reasoning, and data organization.
- Knowledge of sociology, psychology, and casework practice, crisis intervention, and treatment modalities.
- Ability to interact effectively with students, parents, teachers, and colleagues.
- Capability to follow written instructions and work collaboratively within a team.
Employees must be able to stand, walk, stoop, bend, climb stairs and drive. They must also use a computer regularly, lift up to 50 pounds, and maintain adequate visual and auditory function. The role may involve contact with hostile individuals and exposure to emergency situations, requiring resilience and sound judgment.
