IntroductionThis examination is being conducted to fill multiple vacancies in the Human Services Agency and to establish an eligible list for future openings. Applications must be submitted online; paper and resume submissions are not accepted.
TYPICAL DUTIES- Supervises a caseload for clients requiring social services.
- Interviews clients in their homes, office, or via telephone to assess needs and problems, evaluates case information, determines appropriate treatment methods, initiates treatment plans, and makes referrals to other agencies.
- Researches, evaluates, develops, and implements financial and basic social treatment plans in cooperation with the client; assesses progress in the case plan.
- Makes home visits to assess housing and health conditions; refers suspected abuse or neglect cases to the appropriate unit.
- Investigates referrals and provides services to clients whose physical or emotional welfare is involved, including those incapable of protecting themselves.
- Coordinates service plans with supervisor, eligibility workers, service providers, and other agencies.
- Prepares case records, reports, and correspondence, including court documents, and maintains appropriate controls using computer systems.
- Interprets and communicates department policies to clients, service providers, and the public; confers with supervisor regarding caseload problems.
- Attends court proceedings and testifies in court.
- Arranges for guardianship or conservatorship of clients.
- Participates in specialized activities such as adoption services, abuse investigation, care‑home evaluations, and placement of clients into appropriate care facilities.
- Performs comprehensive assessments of client’s psychological, physical, social, and environmental needs and develops realistic service plans with an interdisciplinary team.
- Mentors assigned staff.
- Monitors program budget; prepares statistical reports and analyses; oversees contractual services.
A master’s degree in social work, behavioral science, sociology, psychology, counseling, or a closely related field.
OR possession of a State of California Marriage and Family Therapy license.
AND one (1) year paid full‑time social casework experience comparable to Social Worker IV in Child Protective Services or Adult Protective Services for a public or governmental agency.
Valid California driver’s license required.
Special requirement:
Positions in Children’s Services units may require an MSW to comply with state regulation; assignments to the Multipurpose Senior Services Program require one (1) year of experience working with the elderly.
The principles and techniques of social work, public service agency functions, individual and group behavior, gerontology, research methods, community organization, relevant laws and regulations, and compliance requirements.
ABILITYEstablish rapport, analyze situations, assess and monitor client needs, develop and implement care plans, apply casework skills, understand laws and regulations, work cooperatively with colleagues, provide consultation, communicate effectively, maintain working relationships, apply casework knowledge, and operate a computer.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTSFrequent operation of computers, repetitive motion, sitting for extended periods, walking, occasional driving, ability to lift 5–60 lbs, good vision and hearing, ability to work alone, and exposure to trauma. Some assignments may require occasional weekends, nights, overtime, and travel.
