Field Operations Engineer
Applied Physical Sciences (APS) is seeking a highly motivated Field Operations Engineer for a full-time position supporting several engineering projects and programs across the company. Successful candidates will have a BS degree in marine engineering, ocean engineering, mechanical engineering or related fields. Professional experience beyond 5 years is desired; however, we will consider less experience for highly qualified candidates.
This position will be responsible for a variety of engineering tasks from design and development to assembly, maintenance and testing of complex maritime systems. Successful candidates will have the ability to work in small, fast-paced engineering R&D programs as a team or individual contributor, potentially with minimal technical supervision.
Candidates must possess hands-on field-testing experience and be comfortable working aboard offshore vessels to support the deployment and recovery of oceanographic instrumentation.
Tasking may include:
- Performing engineering work related to the conceptualization, design, evaluation, planning, testing and operation of prototype marine systems and ocean instruments
- Preparing for and executing pier-side and at-sea testing
- Traveling in support of testing, approximately 10-30% of the year
- Design and fabrication of oceanographic moorings
- Maintenance and operation of oceanographic instrumentation and unmanned platforms
- Writing procedures in support of testing
- Implementing lessons learned from previous projects
- Optimization of test gear and assets going to sea
- Strong mechanical and/or electrical aptitude with the ability to independently solve moderately complex problems
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and electrical schematics
- Ability to use basic hand tools and electrical test and measurement equipment
- Experience on ships, planning and executing deployment of moorings, buoys, and UxV's
- Excellent verbal and written communication to accurately document and report findings to colleagues, customer, vendors, etc.
- Organized and detail oriented
- Hands-on field-testing experience
- Strong demonstrated safety awareness and management
- Experience with Solid Works, CAD, MATLAB, Linux
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite
- Experience on ships and offshore rigging
- Experience with mechanical production and sustainment of maritime systems
- Experience with basic data plotting and analysis
- Five or more years of professional experience
