Overview
Applied Physical Sciences (APS) is seeking a highly motivated Ocean Engineer for a full‑time entry‑level position supporting several impactful projects across the company. Candidates should have a BS degree in ocean engineering or a related field and will build foundational skills within their domain.
They will support project teams with a variety of engineering tasks from design and development to assembly, maintenance, and testing of complex maritime systems. Ideal candidates thrive in small, fast‑paced R&D environments, as part of larger teams or as individual contributors under the guidance of more experienced engineers.
Job Functions and Responsibilities- Support the full marine system development cycle, from conceptualization and design to production planning, procurement, fabrication, component‑level testing, system integration, system testing, and sustainment.
- Travel for testing (approximately 5–15% of the year).
- Design and fabricate oceanographic moorings.
- Design, fabricate, and test subsea wet cables.
- Maintain and operate oceanographic instrumentation and unmanned platforms.
- Write procedures for fabrication and testing.
- Implement lessons learned from previous projects.
- Integrate and optimize test gear and assets for sea deployment.
- Prepare for and execute pier‑side and at‑sea testing.
- B.S. degree in Ocean Engineering or related domain.
- Strong mechanical and/or electrical aptitude; ability to independently solve moderately complex problems.
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
- Use basic hand tools and electrical test/measurement equipment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication for documenting and reporting findings.
- Write procedures for integration, production, and testing.
- Experience with basic data plotting and analysis in Python, MATLAB, or equivalent.
- Organized, detail‑oriented.
- Understand and communicate fundamental electrical and mechanical concepts; collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience with Altium, ORCAD, or similar electronic schematic capture/simulation tools.
- Experience with Solid Works, CAD, or other solid modeling tools.
- Basic proficiency interfacing with Linux‑based systems.
- Familiarity with subsea wet cable design and construction.
- Experience at sea and familiarity with offshore rigging.
- Experience in mechanical production and sustainment of maritime systems.
- Familiarity with localization methods, including beamforming.
- Experience with acoustic propagation models and tools.
- Experience or familiarity with electronics assembly, wiring, crimping, and soldering.
- Proficiency with electronic laboratory test equipment (digital multimeter, oscilloscope, function generator, voltage/current measurement probes).
- Experience working in an R&D environment and in small multidisciplinary teams.
