Nursing Station Clerk/NSC Trainee 19N Med Onc Full Time

Position Summary:

Nursing Station Clerks 1 are assigned to either inpatient or outpatient units where there is daily contact with patients. This team member greets visitors and directs them to appropriate locations; answers telephones; performs data entry activities; maintains daily and clinical logs; prepares, updates, and maintains patient charts and files; fills out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions; mails patient letters; and delivers supplies and records to an assigned unit.

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment) it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.

Duties
  • Orient patient and/or family to unit, providing general information regarding the room, unit and hospital and serve as a contact person to patients and families.
  • Give information on patient condition within existing policies, and direct visitors to the appropriate locations.
  • Process physicians' orders by recording written orders in charts, cards, flag sheets, or directly into a computer file after review by a Registered Nurse; and by filling out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions.
  • Receive new admissions.
  • Prepare and maintain patient charts, daily log, and clinic log.
