The Civil Service list for this position might provide insufficient acceptors, therefore, a non competitive NY HELPS appointment may be made. To be considered for a non competitive NY HELPS appointment, candidate must be in possession of a license and current registration to practice Dental Hygiene in New York State.

BLS Certification.

Dental Hygienists are licensed to practice dental hygiene in New York State and perform a wide variety of dental services in accordance with Article 133 of the Education Law. Positions assist dentists in their practice by performing preventive and therapeutic treatment procedures and by instructing individuals in oral self‑care techniques. Individual refers to a person who is being treated or cared for, and is used in place of patient, client, or other nomenclature specific to an agency.

Dental Hygienist: works under the supervision of a licensed dentist; performs duties in the areas of preventive and therapeutic treatment and the instruction of individuals in oral self‑care techniques, which have been identified by the New York State Education Department as functions requiring licensure, for at least seventy percent of their working time.

This position is assigned to work at The Long Island State Veterans Home, located on the campus of Stony Brook University. The Long Island State Veterans Home is a 350‑bed skilled nursing facility with a 40‑slot Adult Day Health Care Program dedicated to the care of honorably discharged Veterans of the United States Armed Forces, their spouses and Gold Star parents.

• Clinical
  • Perform dental services under the supervision of a licensed dentist.
  • Place and expose diagnostic dental X‑ray films.
  • Remove deposits, growths, and stains from the exposed surfaces of the teeth and apply topical agents for dental treatment.
  • Remove cement, place or remove rubber dam, remove sutures, and place matrix band.
  • Perform topical medication, fluoride, and anesthetic applications.
  • Polish teeth, including existing restorations.
  • Takes impressions for study casts.
  • Place and remove temporary restorations.
  • May perform all services properly performed by a Dental Assistant.
• Administrative
  • Takes medical history and charts dental caries.
  • Teaches proper hygiene techniques for teeth and gums and develops individual at‑home oral hygiene programs.
• Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

This is a part‑time position, 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday, days varied, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. FLSA Non‑Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 12 Hiring Rate $40,340 at .80 FTE and Geographic Pay of $10,400.
