Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). One (1) year of full-time experience working with students in an academic setting. Highly proficient professional experience in: word processing, spreadsheet management, electronic messaging and internet applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in higher education, student affairs, social work, counseling or related discipline. Experience in academic advising, working with undergraduates. Experience working with an engineering student population and/or knowledge of engineering disciplines. Experience interacting with a diverse student population, including international students. Experience coordinating programs and/or events. Experience teaching student-development courses, facilitating workshops or leading presentations.

Brief Description of Duties:

The Academic Advisor and CEAS SUNY Korea Programs Coordinator provides high quality academic advising to undergraduate students in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) and coordinates efforts that support their academic and personal success. They will provide high quality proactive academic advising; develops realistic academic road-maps to graduation with students; helps students navigate the University; refers students to other relevant advising departments;

and connects students to appropriate campus support resources. They will assist with retention-related tracking, reporting, and outreach to support students toward graduation. This position provides a significant link to all undergraduate CEAS programs at SUNY Korea, and is an active leader and participant in assisting with the orientation and registration process for SUNY Korea students attending Stony Brook University. The successful incumbent will work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.

They will have strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.

  • Academic Advising :

    • Provide high quality, proactive and timely advising to students in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) with an emphasis on SUNY Korea students studying CEAS programs at Stony Brook University. Such advising will occur in individual and group settings, and will include regular communication about courses, majors, degree requirements and policies/procedures.

    • Help students develop meaningful educational plans that are compatible with career and life goals, including selection of appropriate courses and interpretation of institutional requirements toward established goals.

  • Program Coordination :

    • Within the assigned cohort, evaluate student records and degree audits each semester and utilize data and analytics to identify areas for intervention.

    • Work closely with Visa and Immigration Services to stay current with policies for F-1 students. Serve on relevant committees and/or meet regularly with stakeholders. Collect and evaluate student performance data, provide updates and reports to the CEAS staff.

    • In consultation with CEAS faculty and staff, complete international forms and paperwork for cohorted students.

    • Develop advising materials and assist with training SUNY Korea students and staff on CEAS major requirements, SBU policies, procedures and general degree requirements.

    • Collaborate with partners in the Office of Global Affairs, CEAS Departments and related campus offices to devise policies for SBU West Campus students interested in studying abroad at SUNY Korea, and for SUNY Korea students studying at SBU West Campus.

    • Develop, implement and evaluate orientation events for visiting SUNY Korea students in CEAS programs.

  • Divisional Support :

    • Assist and participate in the onboarding and registration of incoming CEAS freshmen and transfer students. Implement registration sessions for the assigned cohort, both one on one and in group settings. This will require a strong command of programmatic requirements to make course recommendations for enrollment and evaluating transfer courses.

    • Participate in large-scale CEAS events and traditions, including CEAS Convocation.

    • Represent the CEAS at various University programs and events including Admissions open houses/receptions and Admitted Students events.

    • Support other initiatives of the CEAS Undergraduate Student Office that build community and encourage engagement and retention within the College.

  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission

Special Notes:

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption. In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly. For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas.
