Description

The Department of Political Science at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in American Politics. This position would begin in Fall 2027. The department is interested in applicants with expertise in American political institutions, American elections, and/or American political behavior. Successful candidates will have a strong record of demonstrated research excellence. Additional duties include fostering inclusive teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, conducting a program of research, and participating in faculty governance at the departmental, college, and university levels.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship
  • Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Political Science or a closely related field conferred by August 31, 2027.
  • Research work applying cutting-edge approaches to problems in American Politics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated record of the following, as evidenced by the applicant’s CV, letters of recommendation, and supporting materials:
    • Record of producing high-quality research
    • Strong research background and training
    • Strong publication record
    • Research interests in political behavior, American politics, or comparative politics
    • Experience teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level

Special Notes: This is a FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

The Department of Political Science is committed to excellence in research and scholarship, graduate student training, undergraduate teaching and learning, public outreach, and the promotion of responsible citizenship. It contributes to the generation of knowledge about politics and aims to deepen scholarly and public understanding of political institutions and the citizenry. The department seeks to prepare students for successful careers in government, academics, and the private sector.

The Department administers B.A. degrees in Political Science and Globalization Studies and International Relations. At the graduate level, the department has a Ph.D. program in Political Science, as well as M.A. degrees in Political Psychology and Public Policy. It is home to 16 tenured and tenure-track faculty, roughly 700 undergraduate majors and minors, staff, Political Science graduate students, and several full-time lecturers.
