Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, Medical Assistants perform clinical, laboratory, and clerical support activities in our Hospital. Incumbents assist physicians or other medical personnel in providing patient care, preparing patients for procedures and examinations, recording vital patient data, and performing standardized routine laboratory procedures such as phlebotomy, specimen collection, and specimen processing. Incumbents also perform routine support activities such as greeting patients, directing them, producing reports, answering telephones, and entering data.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Non‑supervisory; performs clinical duties at least 50% of the time in accordance with prescribed procedures.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
Medical Assistants function under direct supervision of nursing personnel in the performance of assigned duties by physicians and other medical personnel. The supervisor oversees and instructs them in performing special procedures and techniques, spot‑checks work, and provides overall direction, control and guidance. Abnormal findings are referred to the supervisor for review, confirmation, and further intervention. Medical Assistants must share pertinent information regarding patient care with physicians and nursing personnel.
During an emergency situation, these positions are expected to immediately get the assistance of physicians and nursing personnel and help gather necessary equipment.
Clinical and Supportive Activities
- Perform screening and measuring procedures, including height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, EKG, and documentation.
- Ensure cleanliness of each patient room.
- Order supplies as needed.
- Prepare patient for exam or laboratory test, answer routine questions, and assist physician with the examination process, including chaperoning patients during clinical exams.
- Prepare and distribute patient information packets.
- Assist patients who have difficulty ambulating; escort and transport patients to other areas.
- Check lab orders, process patient orders, and perform specimen collection per order.
- Pre‑clean, prepare, and high‑level disinfect instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies per established procedures.
- Assist physician with procedures.
- Under direction of a registered nurse/physician, obtain peripherally drawn blood specimens; obtain and transmit 12‑lead EKG; document and notify registered nurse regarding blood glucose results via point‑of‑care testing; and perform glucometer quality control checks per established policies.
- Adhere to hospital policy regarding HIPAA, OSHA, Universal precautions, and proper Patient Identification.
- Summon assistance in emergency situations and obtain needed equipment.
Support Activities
- Greet patients and family, direct and escort them to appropriate locations, and respond to routine visitor questions; monitor patient flow and communicate with patients as needed.
- Answer phones, screen and route calls, take complete and accurate messages, refer problematic calls to appropriate parties, and page staff or contact other areas of the hospital as necessary.
- Maintain stock in the patient care area, conduct inventory, and reorder medical and office supplies using automated and manual purchase order processes.
Minimum Qualifications
- Either: one year of full‑time experience performing clinical and clerical support activities in a health care setting;
- or: completion of a college, university, technical school or vocational school medical assistant program.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with EMR.
- BLS or Heart Saver certification.
- Current Medical Assistant certification.
- Excellent communication skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must be physically capable of executing duties, including prolonged standing/walking, lifting, pushing, and transferring patients.
- Lifting supplies/equipment, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching as required.
