Position SummaryAt Stony Brook Medicine, under the general direction of the Director of Nursing Support Services, this role (Assistant Director of Nursing/House‑wide Supervisor) coordinates all administrative and clinical matters pertaining to nursing activities in the hospital. Duties include supervision and guidance of clinicians, evaluation of patient care practices, implementation of performance improvement, and participation in decision‑making activities. Qualified candidates demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

- Participate and monitor the organization’s quality and patient safety programs.
- Knowledgeable participation in quality and patient safety programs.
- Assess units/organization for factors related to patient safety, staffing/scheduling methodology, and patient flow.
- Participate in goals for staffing, scheduling, utilization of patient acuity system and patient flow process.
- Coordinate and direct day‑to‑day patient flow of the ED/PACU and all inpatient units within the Division of Nursing; work cohesively with the Admitting Department to ensure timely bed assignments; advise the Director of all matters pertinent to the administration of Nursing Support Services.
- Maintain an appropriate level of staffing to meet patient care requirements and NYS Nursing Quality Protection Act; make daily staffing adjustments to accommodate changes in patient census and acuity.
- Give prior approval for overtime usage in the absence of the Unit Manager while remaining cognizant of the nursing budget.
- Assign float staff/agency personnel based on established guidelines in accordance with credentialing criteria.
- Address and resolve patient/family concerns and complaints.
- Function as the Administrator on Duty for all hospital related activities during evenings, nights, weekends and holidays; ensure backup AOD/Chief Nursing Officer is apprised of pertinent issues related to hospital operations in a timely manner.
- Ensure full compliance with requirements set forth by accrediting and regulatory agencies.
- Implement Chain of Command policy as appropriate; empower staff to utilize Chain of Command policy.
- Demonstrate proficiency in computer applications Clairvia and Capacity Management; utilize SB Safe for reporting quality improvement information.
- Assist in development and implementation of policies and procedures; interpret hospital policies to nursing staff and provide opportunities for education when necessary.
- Provide direct day‑to‑day evaluation of quantitative services to patients and communicate results to appropriate Nurse Manager.
- Collaborate with members of the medical staff and other disciplines in planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care.
- Maintain regular communication with Nurse Managers regarding observations of staff and clinical performance.
- Ensure implementation and evaluation of standards of nursing practice; participate in the Performance Improvement Program Activities.
- Serve on selected committees as designated by the Director of Nursing Support Services.
- Conduct ongoing quality assurance chart reviews to ensure appropriate medical documentation is provided by the medical health care team.
- Current NYS RN Licensure.
- B.S.N. or related field.
- Five years post‑licensure experience, including three years in specialty and two years management/supervisory experience.
- Proficiency in computer skills.
- This position includes working two full weekends in a four‑week schedule.
- Verification of degree (e.g., diploma or official transcript) is required; upload documentation with the application.
