Patient Access Representative, Emergency Room (Days 11a‑7p) - Job #2600361
Position Summary: At Stony Brook Medicine, patient access representatives support the Revenue Cycle, Compliance, and Patient Experience by completing registration, financial screening, verification, and patient throughput tasks. They communicate with internal and external customers, provide excellent customer service, and adhere to confidentiality and policy procedures.
Duties:
- Supports activities to ensure excellence in throughput and patient experience for emergency room visits, admissions, observation and transfer patients.
- Completes high‑volume complex bedside patient registration.
- Completes pre‑arrival, pre‑registrations and registrations using computer systems for all inter‑ and intra‑facility transfers, following prescribed workflows.
- Maneuvers a workstation on wheels through patients’ rooms within the designated registration area.
- Communicates professionally with patients and families experiencing serious health issues.
- Secures patient demographic information, admission source, mode of arrival, patient type, and insurance coverage to support billing and revenue goals.
- Verifies coverage eligibility and determines patient cost share (co‑pay); takes payments at point of service.
- Provides financial guidance and information on insurance coverage, including financial assistance services; collects required deposits when appropriate.
- Obtains necessary consent and regulatory signatures from patients or designees.
- Collects required documents (, insurance) and witnesses consents and acknowledgements.
- Reviews registrations for completeness and correctness, follows up on incomplete or ineligible insurance.
- Adjusts workflow priorities in response to changing patient census and acuity.
Schedule: Day shift 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.; variable pass days; weekend availability required; may work holidays.
Essential Position: This position is designated as essential; the employee may be required to remain at work or report during institutional emergencies.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Associate’s degree and one year of experience in customer service, public health, healthcare, or related industry such as insurance.
- Alternative:
Two years of demonstrated excellence in a customer service/call‑center, healthcare, or related role requiring payment collection, insurance reimbursement, or access services. - Must maneuver a workstation on wheels through patient rooms.
- Communicates professionally with patients and families.
Preferred:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Experience in health‑care insurance billing and/or hospital patient access, intake, or registration.
- Familiarity with medical insurance benefits and EMR registration systems.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Previous experience as a patient access representative in an emergency room.
Additional Requirements (prior to start date):
- Pre‑employment physical examination and medical clearance.
- Electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references.
- 4‑panel drug screen.
- Regulatory screening compliance.
- Submission of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
- Verification of degree with diploma or transcript.
Salary Range: $54,175 – $60,010 per year. Supplemental pay may include location pay and other benefits.
