Overview
Position Summary Laboratory Aides assist technicians and pathologists in a hospital clinical laboratory, a medical research laboratory or in a morgue by performing a variety of semi-skilled routine tasks and/or clerical duties under direction to assist medical staff in making or confirming diagnosis to assist research staff in their work.
Responsibilities- Accessions patient specimens utilizing the computer system and/or manual procedures.
- Records data into appropriate accession log books.
- Reviews all patient specimens received for proper labeling to ensure proper patient identification and appropriate sample type and size for test procedure.
- Processes and prepares patient specimens for analysis to include centrifugation, measurement of 24 hour urines, etc.
- Answers the telephone to provide information on availability of patient services, specimen collection requirements.
- Maintains records of laboratory reports as assigned and perform other clerical related duties.
- Learn the computer to obtain pertinent data and to report test results and generate orders, etc.
- Will be required to provide backup support in laboratory stat service and serve as a runner in transporting specimens.
- Adheres to all policies and protocols to ensure quality patient care and maintenance of safety rules and regulations.
- Will perform inventory control, stock shelves, and other related duties as assigned.
- Required: No minimum education or experience requirements.
- Preferred: High School Diploma, Medical Terminology and prior hospital/lab experience preferred. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/Powerpoint).

Pre-EmploymentRequirements
- Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services
- Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references
- Successfully complete a 4-panel drug screen
- Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s)
- The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
