Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, our Hospital Attendants are valuable members of our team, who attend to the daily living and personal hygiene needs of patients in order to make patients more comfortable. They may also devote considerable time to housekeeping and cleaning tasks related to patient care and to the transporting of patients. Qualified candidates should demonstrate excellent intrapersonal skills and time management skills.
They should have attention to detail and be able to work with all levels of the organization.
Duties of a Waiting Room Receptionist may include the following but are not limited to:
- Courteously greets all visitors upon arrival to the hospital.
- Oversees patient and visitor interactions in the Surgical Waiting Room.
- Collaborate with security with patient and visitor check in during high volume times. - Serves as a liaison between individuals in the waiting area and clinical areas by facilitating communication among patients, family members and clinical staff.
- Answers telephones in a prompt and courteous manner, providing a high level of assistance to callers.
- Responds to visitor inquiries and/or assist them with problem solving concerns.
- Communicates with patients, visitors and staff in a courteous, respectful and service oriented manner at all times. - Contacts patient care units to request permission on behalf of visitors for after hour visiting.
- Uses appropriate crisis prevention and de-escalation techniques when experiencing difficult encounters. - Appropriately escalates potential problems, issues or unusual questions to supervisor in a timely manner.
- Organizes supplies and materials at the Information Desk. Keeps all work areas clean, clutter free and well organized.
- Tracks supplies, including, but not limited to: printer ink, rolls of visitor passes, information handouts, PPE, etc. and promptly notifies supervisor when supply levels are getting close to established par levels.
Required: Ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor. Must be able to speak, read and write English.
Preferred:
Associate degree and 2 years current experience in health care setting. Excellent communication skills and computer skills for fast paced environment.

Posting Overview: This position will remain posted until filled or for a maximum of 90 days. An initial review of all applicants will occur two weeks from the posting date. - All Hospital positions maybe subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary.
- This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.
- This function/position maybe designated as "essential." This means that when the Hospital is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover, and continue operations at Stony Brook Medicine, Stony Brook University Hospital and related facilities.
- Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
- Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
- Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
- Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
* The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
