The Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook University is a nationally recognized research department committed to advancing molecular science to improve the human condition. Faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and undergraduate students engage in highly interdisciplinary research spanning the chemical sciences in collaboration with partners across the University and neighboring institutions.
The Department supports a dynamic research and teaching enterprise within approximately 300,000 square feet of space, including more than 175 instructional and research laboratories. Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site leadership role located in Stony Brook, NY, for the Director of Chemistry Facilities and Operations (official title: Director of Chemical Laboratories).
The Director provides executive oversight of departmental business operations, laboratory support services, facilities planning, regulatory compliance, and technical staff supervision. This role serves as a strategic operational partner to Department leadership and University administration.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Leading departmental financial operations, including budget development, reconciliation, forecasting, and grants oversight
- Managing capital projects, laboratory renovations, and infrastructure improvements
- Supervising technical, scientific, and administrative staff
- Overseeing federal, state, and university regulatory compliance (including EPA, OSHA, DEC, and OFPC requirements)
- Partnering with faculty, researchers, and University offices to support research growth and instructional excellence
- Ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operations across instructional and research laboratories
This position plays a critical role in maintaining operational continuity and advancing the Department’s research and teaching mission.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Chemistry, Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related STEM field
- Demonstrated experience in advanced budget management and financial oversight
- Experience managing laboratory operations and facility safety within a research or academic environment
- Experience supervising and developing technical and administrative staff
- Experience coordinating construction, renovation, or capital projects in laboratory or comparable technical facilities
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local compliance regulations affecting laboratory operations
- Exceptional organizational, strategic thinking, and leadership skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in a related field
- Experience in higher education administration
- Experience with grants management and sponsored programs
- Familiarity with enterprise systems such as People Soft, Oracle, COEUS, or HURON Click
- Knowledge of SUNY State and Research Foundation policies and procedures
