At Stony Brook University Hospital the RN2 is an experienced, registered nurse who is provides direct nursing care to individuals in an acute care environment requiring advanced clinical interventions; and performs professional nursing functions in three areas: direct individual care, preceptor, and clinical management.

The RN 2 Nurse has the skills to provide complex nursing care to patients in an acute care setting; provides leadership as a preceptor to staff nurses, students, and other health professionals to develop and apply specialty care skills; coordinates with health team members to facilitate unit operations and patient care; supports quality patient care delivery and advancing nursing science.

The candidate provides direct patient care requiring complex nursing skills within their specialty area; uses advanced knowledge and skills in assessment and planning of nursing care; assumes responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing care to assigned patients and those patients assigned to preceptors and students; sets priorities to meet the patient’s needs based on covert and overt assessment data;

uses effective communication strategies with patients, families, staff and the general public; participates in unit and hospital-based quality assurance activities and committees to contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession at Stony Brook University Hospital; functions as a unit leader providing guidance and support to other nursing staff members and facilitating hospital priorities related to coordination of patient care.

• Individually Independently performs any and all direct patient care duties of a Registered Nurse 1 (T&RC).
• Provides nursing care to individuals in an acute care environment requiring complex nursing skills; uses advanced knowledge and skill in nursing assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation activities.
• Observes and responds to individual emergency situations, and sets priorities for care based on individual acuity, preferences, and the possibility of effective intervention. Implements nursing interventions in response to changes in individual status and unusual circumstances.
• Identifies safety and security risks to promote a culture of safety and to prevent injury and harm to individuals, visitors, and staff.
• Provides clinical supervision and instruction to Graduate Nurses (T&RC), Teaching & Research Center Licensed Practical Nurses, and direct care staff in completing care tasks.
• Delegates responsibility for appropriate nursing activities, skills, and/or procedures to nursing and direct care staff; and makes clinical rounds to assess individuals’ nursing care needs and observe and evaluate the provision of nursing services.
• May perform the full range of supervisory duties over Graduate Nurses (T&RC), Teaching & Research Center Licensed Practical Nurses, and direct care staff; provide information to Registered Nurse Supervisors 1 (T&RC); and prepare or contribute to the preparation of reports and performance evaluations for lower-level staff involved in nursing care activities.

• Guides Registered Nurse 1’s in choosing nursing interventions, developing skills, and applying knowledge.
• Serves as a consultant/resource nurse on a consistent basis for staff members, orienting new staff and providing feedback on nursing skills for specialty care areas area skill application on other nursing units; serves a preceptor for nursing students from various academic programs.
• Develops knowledge base related to standards of care for specialty, developing guidelines of care for unit specific patient populations.
• Maintains a minimum standard of continuing education for assigned specialty area.
• Participates in in-services and other educational programs related to clinical specialties. Assists in providing educational programs and learning aids to staff and to affiliated nursing students.
• Collaborates with other members of the health care team in the identification, development, and implementation of nursing research studies on the clinical units.

• Coordinates with other health team members for consultation and problem-solving of complex clinical issues. Collaborates with nursing leadership to develop short and long-term clinical goals for the units and departments.
• Evaluates and integrates clinically specific information on patient care and operational functions; develops specific policies and procedures in consultation with leadership as they impact area of specialization.
• Defines, recommends, and provides corrective actions to formulate and upgrade standards for quality and appropriateness of care; may oversee testing of equipment and supplies for effectiveness in patient care.
