Position: Fish and Wildlife Technician 1

Overview

Collection and analysis of acoustic data to determine the summer distribution of Myotis bats on Long Island. Duties include interpreting aerial images to identify survey locations, setup and maintenance of sound recording equipment, data management and analysis of recorded bat calls, and assisting with mist netting and radio tracking of Myotis bat species.

Assist with other regional wildlife programs including the monitoring and management of endangered species; non-game species; game species; and nuisance wildlife. May assist in posting boundaries on state managed lands, performing land management activities including trail maintenance, grassland management and facility maintenance.

Responsibilities
  • Collect and analyze acoustic data to determine summer distribution of Myotis bats on Long Island.
  • Interpret aerial images to identify appropriate survey locations.
  • Set up and maintain sound recording equipment; manage and analyze recorded bat calls.
  • Assist with mist netting and radio tracking of Myotis bat species.
  • Assist with other regional wildlife programs, including monitoring and management of endangered, non-game, game, and nuisance wildlife.
  • Assist in posting boundaries on state-managed lands and perform land management activities (trail maintenance, grassland management, facility maintenance).
Qualifications
  • Minimum Qualifications:

    30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.
  • Preferred qualifications:

    experience with following survey and research protocols; navigating remote and difficult terrain; using GPS units for navigation and field data collection; using ArcGIS; working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Additional Information
  • This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 11/15/2026. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
  • Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
  • Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain; work in remote areas; and work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Travel may be required; overtime and overnight travel may be required; weekends and holidays may be required.
  • Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
