Job Description - Postdoctoral Associate (2600415)

Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to lead a high‐profile research project focused on understanding long‑term trends in carbonate chemistry and ocean acidification in the New York Bight (NYB). The objectives, as outlined in detail below, are to:
1) assist in collecting new samples and data focused on various parameters relevant to ocean acidification during at least three cruises per year,
2) evaluate these new and previously collected seasonal cruise data (over numerous cruises since 2018) to determine long‑term trends in carbonate chemistry of the NYB, and
3) work with a team of Ecosystem and Climate Change Indicators experts to evaluate if and how OA might be affecting the biota associated with the NYB. Funding is provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC).

This is planned as a 2‑year position but has the potential for extension depending on performance and availability of funds.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in the discipline of oceanography, marine science or a closely related field.
  • Experience programming in Matlab, R or other statistical languages and a high level of proficiency in evaluating the quality of data and large data sets.
  • Excellent scientific communication skills as demonstrated by previous publications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with oceanographic (underway) and laboratory‑based equipment for carbonate chemistry.
  • Experience on oceanographic vessels.
Duties

The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences under the supervision of Principal Investigator, Dr. Roy Price. The Associate will assist in efforts to monitor carbonate chemistry in the New York Bight, including analysis of water samples collected in New York waters using advanced techniques and synthesize existing and new data to understand mechanisms of ocean acidification. The Associate will report findings to the PIs and NYDEC in a timely manner and maintain a database of observations collected as part of this project.

A major requirement of the position will be to prepare manuscripts for publication in peer‑reviewed journals, along with presentations at scientific research conferences and preparing proposals for external funding.

The successful incumbent will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time‑management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.

Additional Duties
  • Assist in the development and design of field studies in support of the NYS DEC program on ocean acidification, including collecting and analyzing carbonate chemistry data, and conducting research experiments utilizing specialized techniques.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in scientific journals and assist in the preparation of proposals for external funding.
  • Assist in the preparation and participation of oceanographic cruises.
  • Present at conferences and to NYSDEC and other management agencies.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special

Note:

This position may require participation in at least three sampling cruises per year, which will include working nights, overnights, and weekends.

This is a full‑time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

Resume/CV and cover letter should be included with the online application.
