Research Coordinator

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume): Bachelor’s degree in a field related to marine, coastal, aquatic, or environmental science or a related discipline. Two (2) years of full‑time experience in research administration, project management, scientific program coordination, or related work. Relevant graduate student work experience will be considered and prorated based on hours worked. (A combination of graduate‑level and post‑graduate professional experience may be used to meet this requirement.)

Proficiency with data management tools, spreadsheets, and reporting systems.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in a field related to marine, coastal, aquatic, or environmental science or a related discipline. Experience with federal grant programs (NOAA, EPA, NSF, USDA, or similar). Familiarity with Sea Grant principles, coastal/marine/Great Lakes science in New York. Experience coordinating peer review processes. Knowledge of research compliance areas such as data management, public access, and project reporting.

Brief Description of Duties
:
The New York Sea Grant (NYSG) Research Coordinator plays a central role in advancing NYSG’s mission to integrate science with stakeholder needs across New York’s coastal, marine, and Great Lakes environments. The Research Coordinator coordinates all aspects of NYSG’s competitive research program, supports multi‑institutional scientific initiatives, and ensures high‑quality stewardship of federally funded research portfolios. This position requires strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with academic researchers, agency partners, extension professionals, and external stakeholders at the state, regional, and national levels.

Research

Program Coordination

Administer NYSG’s biennial and special‑call competitive research processes, including proposal solicitation, review coordination, technical compliance checks, and award preparation.

Maintain program guidance and documentation to ensure federal compliance (e.g., NOAA Sea Grant; EPA requirements).

Oversee tracking, reporting, and monitoring of funded projects throughout their lifecycle.

Manage internal systems for proposal submission, review logistics, decision documentation, and award notifications.

Data, Reporting, and Compliance

Ensure timely collection and verification of project progress and final reports, publications, and performance metrics.

Prepare annual and ad‑hoc reports for NOAA, EPA, state partners, and NYSG leadership.

Maintain project records in research databases and support program audits and federal reviews.

Monitor adherence to federal and state policies regarding research integrity, data management, and accessibility.

Research Integration and Stakeholder Engagement

Facilitate alignment between NYSG research investments and stakeholder priorities, including coordination with NYSG Extension, state agencies, local governments, and community groups.

Organize research workshops, webinars, and outreach events to increase visibility and impact of funded science.

Support communication of research outcomes to diverse audiences, working closely with NYSG Communications.

Program Development and Strategic Planning

Contribute to long‑range planning for NYSG research investments, helping identify emerging needs, funding gaps, and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Assist in writing program plans and omnibus proposals, developing cross‑Sea Grant collaborative proposals, and supporting regional/national research initiatives.

Representation and Collaboration

Represent NYSG at state, regional, and national Sea Grant meetings, working groups, and research‑focused committees.

Build and maintain strong relationships with academic institutions, federal/state agencies, and research consortiums.

Other Duties

Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

This is a full‑time appointment. FLSA Non‑Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
