Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of the degree, any combination of education and/or sea-time experience working on boats, including vessel maintenance totaling two (2) full-time years may be considered.
  • Must possess and maintain CPR and AED Certification.
  • Must have, keep and maintain a valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Marine Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Engineering or a related field.
  • Sea time experience working on boats, including vessel maintenance.
  • Experience with machining, welding, woodworking, diesel engine maintenance, outboard maintenance, or hydraulic system maintenance.
  • Possess a valid USCG Captains License.
  • Experience with bottom trawling fishing, repairing fishing nets, and related ground tackle.
  • Prior at-sea experience aboard an oceanographic research vessel and with oceanographic research equipment, commercial fishing gear, or other at-sea operations such as dredging or towing.
  • Knowledge of computers, programs, networking, especially MS Excel, MS Word, MS Access, and Google applications.
  • Knowledge of shipboard electronics, 12V power systems, interfacing (NEMA 0183, NMEA 2000).
  • Experience cooking on vessels for 10 to 20 people.

The R/V Seawolf Deckhand is responsible for supporting faculty, staff, students, and other scientific and educational parties while on board the R/V Seawolf. The incumbent will share responsibility for day‑to‑day operational needs and vessel facilities maintenance, assist research parties with calibration, handling, and deployment of oceanographic equipment, and ensure the vessel and facilities are maintained in proper and efficient operating capacity.

Excellent customer service, interpersonal, organizational, and time‑management skills are essential, as is the ability to work independently or as part of a team in varying conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Support the Port Captain and science crew, performing routine maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Assist Port Captain with haul‑out regarding vessel operating capabilities.
  • Assist in the maintenance of boathouse and other SoMAS building facilities when not at sea.
  • Work with Seawolf and Port Captain to procure vessel and operational supplies and equipment according to scheduled vessel operations and science team requirements.
  • Operate deck gear in the deployment and retrieval of sampling gear and assist science parties aboard the vessel to carry out their mission safely and optimally.
  • Regularly stand navigational watch as required on long‑day or overnight cruises.
  • Help enforce shipboard safety rules and procedures and ensure safe boat operation and safety of personnel.
  • Serve as the ship's cook, responsible for identifying, procuring, and safely storing food for cruises and developing recipes that meet the dietary needs of crew and science party.
  • Perform additional routine shipboard and shore‑side duties directed by the vessel captain, including scraping, sanding, priming/painting, and other vessel maintenance.
  • Support science teams in preparing for their on‑board research and educational programs when required.
  • Assist with identification of species, proper handling of animals and experimental materials, and appropriate methods to be utilized such as measuring, weighing, and tagging.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair all SoMAS‑owned field and oceanographic research equipment.
  • Ensure that all required sampling or area‑use permits are valid and current.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned appropriate to rank and department mission.
Special Notes
  • This is a full‑time appointment. FLSA Non‑Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
  • No sponsorship for work visas is available for this position.
  • Eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
  • Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
