Job Description – Cryo‑EM Specialist (2602194)
Stony Brook University is seeking a talented, motivated and highly interactive individual to facilitate the operation, development, and long‑term success of our cryo‑EM facility.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in engineering, physics, biological sciences, material sciences or a related field of science.
- Two (2) years of full‑time experience in the operation of microscopes and experience with cryo‑EM image processing.
- Experience in cryo‑EM sample preparation, data collection using a 200 or 300 kV transmission electron microscope, and computational image processing using Relion and/or Cryosparc as exemplified by publications.
- Previous experience with training students.
The facility houses a Thermo Fisher Scientific 200 kV Talos Arctica equipped with a Falcon 4i direct electron detector, as well as infrastructure for cryo‑EM sample preparation and image processing. The successful candidate will play a key role in driving all phases of cryo‑EM workflows, including project consultation and design, sample preparation, data acquisition, and advanced image analysis.
In addition, the candidate will contribute to the strategic and operational management of the facility, including user training, maintenance and benchmarking of instrumentation, supply management, scheduling, and billing as needed. The candidate will collaborate closely with internal and external investigators to enable high‑impact structural biology research and will play an active role in developing scientific resources, methods, and proposals that expand the capabilities and visibility of the cryo‑EM facility.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as the role involves frequent interaction with a diverse user base and coordination with administrative and research teams.
Key Responsibilities- Provide expert technical support in cryo‑EM data processing and analysis.
- Train users in sample preparation and data collection.
- Maintain instrumentation and ensure smooth operation of the facility.
- Develop collaborations with internal and external users.
Scheduling and billing. - Assist with teaching/scientific demonstrations, manuscript writing and grant applications.
- Other duties and projects as assigned and appropriate to rank and area mission.
This is a full‑time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
