Position: Professional Geologist 1 - NY HELPS

Job Summary

This position is for a project manager responsible for various state‑funded and privately funded remedial program sites. The role includes management and oversight of investigation and remediation projects in the State’s Superfund, Brownfield, and Environmental Restoration programs.

Responsibilities
  • Manage multiple investigation and remediation projects.
  • Interact with responsible parties, property owners, public and governmental agencies.
  • Oversee remediation sites, remedial consultants, and contractors.
  • Review and approve investigation work plans; assess site contamination and remedial alternatives.
  • Prepare site‑related documents, implement selected remedies, and monitor remedy effectiveness.
  • Assist in training less experienced staff on technical matters and Division of Environmental Remediation protocols.
Qualifications
  • New York State Professional Geologist license and current registration.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology, environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science, geophysics, or hydrogeology.
  • Experience with environmental investigation and remediation of sites.
  • Effective communication skills, including public speaking with diverse stakeholders.
  • For NY HELPS appointments: must meet the minimum qualifications and may be eligible by reassignment, reinstatement, or transfer via Section 70.1.
Additional Requirements
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or meet transportation needs.
  • Use of personal protective equipment, including respirator, required.
  • Must work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Travel and overnight travel may be required.
  • Must complete 40‑hour OSHA  training and all other required training.
  • Must complete annual Health and Safety Program including medical monitoring, fit testing, and 40‑hour or 8‑hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification.
  • Telecommuting may be available up to 50% of the schedule.

Salary & Benefits
  • Starting salary: $104,798 (base $91,298 + geographic pay differential $13,500).
  • Job rate: $128,752 (base $115,252 + geographic pay differential $13,500).
