Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, the Supervising Electrician supervises electricians and other workers engaged in the repair, maintenance, and installation of electrical systems and equipment. Incumbents are working supervisors and perform any task in the electrical trade.
Duties- Supervises and plans the work for a subordinate maintenance crew of skilled, semi‑skilled and relatively unskilled employees.
- Examines blueprints, schematic drawings and sketches to determine material and labor requirements and may order required materials and supplies.
- Prepares sketches from oral or written instructions showing location of wiring and electrical equipment.
- Assigns staff to each project, providing oral instructions, blueprints or sketches and interprets specifications as required.
- Coordinates with supervisors of other trades to schedule work and ensure timely completion.
- Observes work in progress to ensure schedule and plan are followed.
- Inspects wiring and fixtures during and after installation for conformity to specifications or codes.
- Keeps written records of work performed and accounts for labor and materials used.
- Periodically prepares standard written evaluations of subordinate staff performance.
- Working knowledge of electrical theory, practices, and mathematics as applied to the electrical trade.
- Knowledge of applicable standards and electrical code regulations.
- Understanding of the principles and practices of supervision.
- Basic knowledge of electronic theory and practice as applied to the electrical trade.
- Ability to read and interpret circuit diagrams, architectural blueprints, and generator and motor control diagrams.
- Ability to use the tools, equipment and materials of the electrical trade.
- Ability to train and supervise others.
- For assigned duties, working knowledge of the operation and repair of digital timing devices used in traffic control systems.
Required Qualifications:
Must meet the qualifications of a Trades Specialist (Electrician) plus one year of trades experience. The Trades Specialist qualifications include:
• Four years of full‑time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson providing training equivalent to that given in a trade apprenticeship or equivalent program, OR
• An equivalent combination of experience and training gained through completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or Armed Forces branch, OR
• Successful completion of a two‑year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a comparable electrician training program such as the NY State Civil Service Employees Association Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.
Additionally, one year of experience as a skilled journeyman electrician following completion of apprenticeship or equivalent training is required.
- Hospital and/or healthcare setting experience.
- Previous supervisory experience in a health care or unionized setting.
- Knowledge of regulatory agency compliance (Joint Commission, DOH, CMS).
