Assistant Football Coach, Offensive
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):- Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years of full time coaching and/or playing experience at the college level in football.
- In lieu of college level coaching experience, a combination of three (3) years of full time coaching experience at the high school, college, professional or national team level and/or playing experience at the college, professional or national team level in football may be considered.
- Understanding of NCAA rules compliance (played a Division I, II or III sport, coached in collegiate athletics or as a staff member in a collegiate athletic program).
- Prior experience with recruiting.
- Experience in administrative responsibilities within football (team scheduling, budget preparation & administration, facility usage, public relations, fundraising, community service, other daily operations).
- Prior experience with skill instruction.
- Experience in practice/game plan development.
- Previous experience with a Division I Athletic Program.
The Assistant Coach for a Division I program supports the Stony Brook University Athletics Department’s mission by assisting the head coach in all aspects of operating a successful sports program. This position will include recruiting, managing the recruiting process for incoming student‑athletes, awarding athletics scholarships, teaching and skill development, and daily administrative operations. The Assistant Coach will be evaluated on the extent to which they provide each student‑athlete a positive, meaningful educational experience through athletics.
Student‑AthleteSkill Instruction/Team and Game Preparation:
Teach all basic and advanced skills required in football. The teaching and development occur year‑round during individual skill sessions, team practices, and conditioning sessions. This includes independent development and implementation of sound and safe practice plans that prepare the student‑athletes. Assist the head coach in developing a comprehensive and strategic game plan for each scheduled contest, evaluating upcoming opponents, breaking down game tapes, and preparing scouting reports.
Use independent discretion to identify student‑athletes capable of competing academically and athletically at Stony Brook University. Participate in recruiting, awarding scholarships, and managing a database of prospects, maintaining records to remain compliant with NCAA, conference, and university regulations.
Administrative Responsibilities:Organize and coordinate a wide variety of administrative tasks assigned by the head coach, including team travel, contest scheduling, budget preparation & administration, facility usage, public relations, marketing, fundraising, community service, and other daily operations. Work independently with support services (Compliance Office, Financial Aid, Admissions, Registrar).
Monitoring of Academic Progress:In conjunction with Student‑Athlete Development, oversee academic success, provide guidance, and supervise study halls. Check class attendance and organize academic meetings to track progress.
Maintain knowledge of NCAA rules and ensure compliance to prevent penalties.
Other duties or projects:As assigned appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:This is a part‑time appointment. FLSA NonExempt position, eligible for overtime. Evening and weekend work will be required this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas. Resume/CV and cover letter should be included with the online application.
