Job Description
Bus Driver, Full‑Time & Part‑Time (2601068)
Required QualificationsPer Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Must have, keep and maintain a valid NYS CDL Class B Driver’s License with Passenger and Air Brakes and be able to be 19A certified as required by New York State DMV. Must have passenger endorsement without restrictions L, Z, N1 or N2 as they are considered non‑qualifying. Must have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations (

Appointment will be contingent upon proof of identity and eligibility for employment and successful completion of pre‑employment testing for controlled substance use as mandated by the Federal Highway Administration Omnibus Transportation Act of 1991. Please note that employment cannot commence until notification for successful completion of this pre‑employment testing is received. Must comply with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing act (drug and alcohol testing).
- Drive a full‑size passenger bus on and off SUNY property to transport passengers and materials as required.
- Check horn, directional lights, head, tail, parking and emergency lights for proper operation. Check proper operation of braking system. Check tires for visible damage. Perform pre‑trip inspection of vehicle and complete required forms.
- Monitor gauges and refuel the tank as necessary.
- Supervise the loading and unloading of passengers and personal property onto the bus.
- Post manifests, inventories and other records of goods and passengers transported, including compiling count sheets from all drivers when assigned.
- Transport passengers with disabilities.
- Operate radio and/or cellular telephones to communicate with dispatcher.
- Keep written records of trips, mileage, stopovers, fuel bridges, tolls and passenger counts; report any malfunction or needed repairs to supervisor or maintenance staff. Include compiling daily bus logs from all drivers.
- Drive campus routes and provide charters for departments and graduation work for Stony Brook University.
- Wash, sweep, clean and fuel buses, vans and other state vehicles.
- Perform minor repairs in emergency situations such as replacing a bulb, inflating tires or replacing windshield wiper blades.
- Map routes, itineraries and points of call for other drivers as well as yourself.
- Transport vehicles to and from vendors for repairs.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
These are temporary full‑time positions (40 hours per week) and temporary part‑time positions (20 hours per week); shifts and days vary with an anticipated start date of August 20, 2026 and anticipated end date of May 26, 2027. Night and weekend work may be required. FLSA non‑exempt positions, eligible for overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. Hiring rate $23.82 per hour.
The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.
Out‑of‑State ApplicantsAs a condition of employment and to satisfy the tendering of this position, the successful incumbent must provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the state issuing the license within five business days of a conditional offer and must obtain an NYS driver’s license within 30 days of official start date.
