Position SummaryAt Stony Brook Medicine, a Motor Vehicle Operator regularly drives a variety of motor vehicles including automobiles, buses, trucks, and ambulances to transport people, material, and equipment as required. The position also includes operations such as plowing snow from roadways and parking lots.
Duties of a Motor Vehicle OperatorDrives a variety of motor vehicles both on and off State property in order to transport people, material, and equipment as required and plows snow from roadways and parking lots.
- Monitors gauges and checks fluid levels and tire pressures.
- Starts, stops, steers, and controls vehicles on the grounds of State institutions and facilities and over the road.
- Posts manifests, inventories, and other records of goods and people transported.
- Moves or carries cargo onto, into, off of, or out of the vehicle operated.
- Maps routes, itineraries, and points of call as necessary.
- Tends to the routine maintenance of vehicles to insure that cargo is moved as required.
- Performs same tasks as mentioned above.
- Pumps gas and adds water to radiator, oil to crankcase, and air to tires.
- Changes tires and washes vehicles.
- Changes oil and spark plugs.
- Operates and maintains motorized equipment in support of maintenance, grounds, or building trades crews.
- Performs same tasks as mentioned above.
- Drive Mammography Mobile to host sites. Flexible schedule of days and hours as required to accommodate travel time to and from sites.
- Site visits to ensure adequate facilities and safety. Maps routes, itineraries, and points of call.
- Mains records of required maintenance, mileage, and fueling. Moves or carries cargo onto, into, off of, or out of the vehicle operated.
- Adheres to manufacturer required maintenance schedule and collaborates on vehicle appearance maintenance requirements.
- Operates and maintains vehicle, including fueling, recommended service, and daily inspection checklist.
- Candidates must possess a New York State driver license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated. Candidates may be required to possess a CDL Class A, B, C or General Class D license.
- Knowledge of the Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to the safe and legal operation of the vehicle in question.
- Knowledge of the nature of cargo carried and any special handling required.
- Knowledge of simple automotive repair and maintenance procedures.
- Ability in the operation of motor vehicles as required.
- Ability to lift and carry crates, cartons, boxes and other cargo onto and off of transport vehicles.
- High School Diploma.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination and medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services.
- Completion of an electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
- Completion of a 4‑panel drug screen.
- Meeting regulatory requirements for pre‑employment screenings.
- Provision of a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
