Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, a Motor Vehicle Operators regularly drive any of a variety of motor vehicles including automobiles, buses, trucks, and ambulances in order to transport people, material, and equipment as required.
Duties of a Motor Vehicle Operator may include the following but are not limited toDrives a variety of motor vehicles both on and off State property in order to transport people, material, and equipment as required and plow snow from roadways and parking lots.
- May map routes, itineraries and points of call.
- Moves or carries cargo onto, into, off of, or out of the vehicle operated.
- Moves or caries cargo from the vehicle to the delivery or storage point.
- Posts manifests, inventories, and other records of goods and people transported.
- Starts, stops, steers and controls vehicles both on the grounds of State institutions and facilities and over-the-road.
- Monitors gauges and checks fluid levels and tire pressures.
Tends to the routine maintenance of vehicles operated in order to insure that cargo is moved as required.
- Changes oil and spark plugs.
- Changes tires and washes vehicles.
- Pumps gas and adds water to radiator, oil to crankcase and air to the tires.
- Replaces lamp bulbs.
- Performs same tasks as mentioned above.
May operate and maintain motorized equipment in support of maintenance, grounds or building trades crews.
- Performs same tasks as mentioned above.
Posts manifests and other records of goods and people transported in order to document their safe delivery.
Required QualificationsCandidates must possess a New York State driver license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated. Candidates may be required to possess a CDL Class A, B, C or General Class D license.
- Knowledge of the Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to the safe and legal operation of the vehicle in question.
- Knowledge of the nature of cargo carried and any special handling required.
- Knowledge of simple automotive repair and maintenance procedures.
- Ability in the operation of motor vehicles as required.
- Ability to lift and carry crates, cartons, boxes and other cargo onto and off of transport vehicles.
Driver must be able to read, write and communicate in English. Preferred for applicant to have taken defensive driving class. Must have a clean license to apply for position.
Posting OverviewThis position will remain posted until filled or for a maximum of 90 days. An initial review of all applicants will occur two weeks from the posting date. Candidates are advised on the application that for full consideration, applications must be received before the initial review date (which is within two weeks of the posting date). If within the initial review no candidate was selected to fill the position posted, additional applications will be considered for the posted position;
however, the posting will close once a finalist is identified, and at minimal, two weeks after the initial posting date. Please note, that if no candidate were identified and hired within 90 days from initial posting, the posting would close for review, and possibly reposted at a later date.
- Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
- Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
- Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
- Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
- The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
