Role Description The Director of Finance/Comptroller is a full-time, on-site role based in Stoughton, WI, responsible for overseeing the City’s financial management and reporting. This position manages day-to-day finance operations, including budgeting, cash management, payroll oversight, and accounts payable/receivable. The role prepares and analyzes financial statements, leads financial reporting to City leadership and governing bodies, and ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and accounting standards.

The Director of Finance/Comptroller develops long-term financial plans, monitors financial performance, and provides data-driven recommendations to support strategic decision-making. This role also supervises finance staff, maintains internal controls, coordinates audits, and collaborates with other departments to support efficient and transparent financial processes.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise in Finance and Financial Planning to oversee budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial strategy.
  • Strong proficiency in Financial Statements and Financial Reporting to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant municipal financial records.
  • Advanced Analytical Skills to interpret financial data, identify trends, and support informed decision-making.
  • Experience in governmental or public sector accounting, including knowledge of relevant regulations and standards (e.g., GAAP, GASB).
  • Proficiency with financial and ERP software, spreadsheets, and data analysis tools.
  • Effective leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to mentor staff and foster collaboration across departments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for presenting financial information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field; professional certification (such as CPA or CPFO) required.
