Your community needs you. Please consider joining today! The Stoughton Fire Department is looking for energetic individuals to fill entry-level volunteer positions. Volunteering with Stoughton Fire is a great way to support the local community or even prepare for a paid career in the fire and rescue service. We are looking for people from a wide age range and backgrounds. If you ever thought about becoming a firefighter, an EMT, or just helping in the community, now is your chance to make it happen!

Applicants must reside or work within the fire protection area served by the City of Stoughton Fire Department, including the City of Stoughton, the Town of Dunkirk, and parts of the Towns of Dunn, Rutland and Pleasant Springs.

Responsibilities
  • Responds to emergency calls, fires.
  • Maintains knowledge of current firefighting techniques.
  • Maintains, monitors, and operates firefighting equipment.
  • Operates firefighting pumps, related equipment and aerial apparatus as needed.
  • Conducts fire prevention presentations to the public on site and at other locations such as schools and businesses.
  • Responds to No Alarms and handles or assists with different situations (i.e. carbon monoxide, fuel spills, smoke odors, etc.)
Education, Training, Certifications & Experience
  • Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license to meet City insurance requirements.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED (General Educational Development) or be at least 18 (eighteen) years old and currently enrolled in high school.
  • Preferred two years of responsible work experience involving public interaction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Vocational or technical training in fire science or a related field is preferred.
  • Must reside or work within the fire protection area served by the City of Stoughton Fire Department, which includes the City of Stoughton, the Town of Dunkirk, and portions of the Towns of Dunn, Rutland, and Pleasant Springs.
  • CPR-BLS (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - Basic Life Support) training and certification, and emergency vehicle operator training will be provided by the City.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must successfully complete a background check, driver’s license verification, pre-employment physical, and drug screening.
Language Skills
  • Ability to analyze and categorize data and information in order to determine the relationship of the data with reference to established criteria/standards. Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, and/or sort data, as well as assemble, copy, and record and transcribe data and information. Ability to classify, compute and tabulate data.
  • Ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well-established policies, procedures, and standards, as well as the ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as technical operating manuals, vehicle and equipment repair manuals, billing statements, time sheets, parts books and catalogs, electrical diagrams, hydraulic diagrams, procedures, guidelines, schedules, lists, hazardous materials lists, incident reports, inventory lists, logs, maps and non-routine correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Department personnel, parts vendor representatives, volunteers, fire/accident victims and families, Mayor, City Clerk, City personnel.
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide, and calculate percentages, fractions, and decimals.
Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to use functional reasoning and apply rational judgement in performing diversified work activities.
  • Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness, and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory and/or judgmental criteria.
