At Heartland Farm Sanctuary, our mission is to inspire compassion for animals, the earth, and each
other. We fulfill this mission through three core programs: farm animal rescue and care, humane
education, and therapy. Our programs are designed to not only function independently but also
intertwine and enhance each other, creating a sanctuary where respect and compassion flow in every
direction.
How You Will Make a DifferenceAs the Director of Operations at Heartland, you will oversee organizational operations, human
resources systems, facilities and grounds planning, and internal infrastructure to support the
sustainability and effectiveness of Heartland's programs and staff.
You will work closely with the Co-Executive Director:
Chief Programs Officer and Program Managers
to ensure that Heartland's operational systems effectively support day-to-day program delivery, staff
wellbeing, and organizational growth.
This role serves as a bridge between strategic leadership and daily operational implementation across
departments.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperations & Organizational Infrastructure
- Ensure the smooth day-to-day operations of the organization through effective systems, processes, and operational planning.
- Oversee IT coordination, facilities management, and operational infrastructure.
- Lead compliance and risk management efforts, including insurance oversight, records management, and organizational compliance tracking.
- Oversee facilities, grounds, and land stewardship projects to ensure Heartland's physical environment supports organizational goals and values.
- Support organization-wide operational planning and process improvement initiatives.
Human Resources & Workplace Culture
- Develop and implement HR systems, policies, and procedures that support organizational goals and compliance.
- Partner with Finance leadership on benefits strategy, payroll coordination, wage scale research, and hiring systems.
- Oversee onboarding and orientation processes for new employees.
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and inclusive workplace culture aligned with Heartland's mission and values.
- Support employee engagement, retention, conflict resolution, and professional development initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with the Co-Executive Director:
Chief Programs Officer and Program Managers to ensure operational systems effectively support all program areas. - Support staffing systems, scheduling structures, facilities coordination, and operational problem-solving across programs.
- Partner with Program leadership to strengthen sustainability, communication, and operational consistency.
- Assist in the development and implementation of organization-wide policies, systems, and workflows.
Organizational Leadership
- Serve as a member of the leadership team, contributing to organizational planning and decision-making.
- Support implementation and tracking of strategic initiatives and organizational priorities.
- Foster collaboration and communication across departments and leadership teams.
- Help strengthen organizational systems that support long-term sustainability and growth.
The Director of Operations must have:
- A strong commitment to Heartland's mission, values, and organizational culture.
- Experience in operations, administration, HR, or organizational management.
- Strong organizational and systems-thinking skills.
- Excellent communication, relationship-building, and conflict resolution abilities.
- High emotional intelligence and a collaborative leadership approach.
- The ability to manage complex operational systems in a dynamic environment.
- Experience supporting teams, managing projects, and improving organizational systems.
- Reliable transportation to the sanctuary in Stoughton.
