SUMMARY:
The Operating Engineer III supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the campus Power Plant by operating, maintaining, and repairing stationary steam boilers and all related auxiliary equipment. This role ensures continuous plant performance, adherence to regulatory and safety standards, and responsive support during campus operational needs and emergencies.
Candidates must possess a New Jersey Black Seal Low‑Pressure License and maintain a valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
- Responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of boilers, turbines, motors, pumps, compressors, blowers, valves and other auxiliary equipment.
- Operates the Power Plant at maximum efficiency at all times, resulting in minimum energy consumption.
- Periodically makes comprehensive tests, takes readings of fuel consumptions pressure, draft conditions, temperatures, seam flow and other recordings.
- Adds chemicals to treat steam, water, fuel in accordance with requirements prescribed.
- Ensures compliance with all regulations.
- Keeps work area clean and neat.
- Makes continual inspections of equipment and systems in area of responsibility and reports conditions to the Manager of Engineering.
- Must be available for all Power Plant emergencies.
- Completes all paperwork in a timely manner. Maintains, logs, records and files of the Power Plants. Gives detail exchange of information to relieving operator. Continually inspects equipment, uses knowledge of Plant layout and learns alternate ways of maintaining continuous operation. Analyzes problems, both causes and effects, and takes corrective action as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned throughout the campus including snow remediation, rounds, resetting breakers, replacing ceiling tiles and other facilities department needs.
