Function / Position SummaryPosition is responsible for assisting the head coach with the organization of the program. The assistant coach aids in conducting practices, motivating students, and instructing student athletes in game strategies and techniques.
Job Duties / Responsibilities- Organizes and oversees specific program levels or areas of responsibility.
- Works within the head coach’s organizational structure.
- Collaborates with the head coach and athletic secretary to verify registration and eligibility of participants.
- Co‑develops game schedules, practice schedules, facility use, transportation needs, and the program budget.
- Communicates and plans practice sessions and competition strategies to ensure the health and physical well‑being of student participants.
- Attends pre‑season parent meetings for all sport levels to review scholastic eligibility, athletic code of conduct, team rules, injury prevention, and inherent risks.
- Co‑manages practice and competition schedules during off‑season, summer, and in‑season periods.
- Assumes responsibility for level inventory, equipment selection, and care.
- Maintains a safe facility and associated equipment.
- Communicates effectively with athletes, school administration, staff, students, parents, and community members.
- Maintains good public relations with media, boosters, parents, officials, players, fans, and local youth programs.
- Builds cooperative relationships with students, parents, staff, and school administration.
- Works effectively with student athletes of varying abilities, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds to instill commitment, discipline, and teamwork.
- Handles stressful situations with composure and quick decision‑making.
- Models and promotes sportsmanship and fair play to all participants.
- Monitors students’ athletic and academic eligibility, collaborating with teachers and administrators to prioritize academics.
- Takes all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Demonstrates punctuality and attendance.
- Plans, organizes, and implements safe, effective daily practices and other scheduled events.
- Supervises all students before, during, and after practices and contests.
- Applies and enforces discipline per the U‑46 Athletic Code of Conduct and U‑46 Student Code of Conduct.
- Collaborates with the head coach on fundraising activities, maintaining accurate financial records in compliance with district policy.
- Provides the head coach with end‑of‑season individual and team records and statistics.
- Supports long‑term program success by establishing positive relationships with local athletics organizations and K‑8 sports programs.
- Attends Freshman Orientation and incoming 8th Grade Night, as applicable.
- Engages in personal professional development activities.
- Performs additional duties/events as assigned by the Head Coach or Athletic Director.
- Proper certification with American Sport Education Program and/or a valid Illinois teaching certificate.
- Completion of IHSA required tests and required video review.
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to implement effective coaching theory, strategies, and techniques appropriate for high‑school athletes.
- Proven record emphasizing sportsmanship, academic excellence, positive attitudes, and character.
- Knowledgeable in the techniques and strategies for the sport/activity.
- Ability to handle and react professionally to stressful situations.
- Background and experience in coaching.
- Ability to stand for long periods and walk or stand for extended durations.
- Operational skill in operating sports‑related equipment and handling various materials.
- Work in a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions, including extreme heat outdoors.
- Capable of lifting equipment up to 50 pounds.
- Reviewed annually by the Athletic Director and Head Program Coach.
- Terms determined by the IHSA‑approved athletic calendar and district policy.
- Sport season aligns with the IHSA Calendar.
- Student opportunities may remain the same, be omitted, or modified per environmental restrictions; position stipends adjust accordingly.
- For ETA coaches: if satisfactory status is maintained, renewal can occur without reapplying.
- For non‑ETA coaches: this is a one‑year position requiring reapplication each year.
