The Manual Machinist is responsible for operating manual machines such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to create precision parts and components. This role requires a high level of attention to detail and the ability to work with technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics. The Manual Machinist will be expected to work independently or as part of a team to meet production goals, ensuring quality and safety standards are adhered to at all times.
Key Responsibilities- Set up and operate various manual machine tools, including lathes, milling machines, and surface grinders, to produce high-quality parts.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work orders to determine machining operations, sequence of operations, and machine setup.
- Select appropriate tools, speeds, feeds, and cutting parameters for each job.
- Inspect and measure parts using micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments to ensure parts meet specifications.
- Maintain accurate records of work completed, including time tracking and any deviations or issues encountered during production.
- Perform regular machine maintenance, including cleaning and lubricating machines to ensure optimal performance.
- Troubleshoot machine issues, identify defects, and make adjustments or repairs as needed.
- Follow all safety protocols and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, adhering to all company health and safety standards.
- Collaborate with engineering and quality control teams to ensure product specifications are met and resolve any production-related issues.
- Continuously monitor and adjust machining processes for efficiency and quality improvements.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or apprenticeship in machining or a related field preferred.
- Proven experience (typically 2+ years) in operating manual machining equipment.
- Strong understanding of machining techniques, materials, and tooling.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
- Experience with precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and height gauges.
- Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and mechanical aptitude.
- Basic computer skills for record-keeping and job tracking.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Dexterity and manual skill to operate machinery and handle tools.
- Must be able to work in a noisy, industrial environment.
- Ability to distinguish between colors for wiring and part identification.
- Full-time, with potential overtime as needed.
- Work performed in a manufacturing environment with exposure to dust, noise, and varying temperatures.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times.
