The Deputy Sheriff, under the direct supervision of the Sergeant, performs varied assignments maintaining order and discipline among detainees remanded to the custody of the Sheriff. The Deputy Sheriff is responsible for the supervision, protection, care, custody and control or investigation of incarcerated inmates and other detainees. This class works under general supervision and requires considerable judgment, initiative, and skill in a variety of situations.
Responsibilities require consistent attention and commitment to the agency's mission. All assigned duties and tasks are expected to be performed in an effective, efficient and safe manner. The jobholder must accept the responsibility to support and promote the organization's mission and comply with its directives. Personal conduct and behavior (on duty as well as off duty) must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public's trust or confidence in the agency or its members.

Specific duties and responsibilities include maintaining security and accountability for tools, equipment, and facility keys; recording and documenting all required information pertaining to logs including housing, 15 minute watch, single cell restriction, restraint, and confinement logs; conducting searches/inspections of individuals, materials and facilities for contraband, evidence, escape attempts, unauthorized articles, weapons, evidence of unauthorized activities, and rule infractions; providing direct supervision and documentation of inmates and their movement within the housing areas of the facility and secure perimeter, including verifying accurate identification and counts;
providing direct supervision and documentation of inmates and their movement while transporting, including verifying accurate identification and counts; controlling, subduing, and restraining inmates by the use of proper restraining hold or device without causing undue pain or injury; responding in a timely manner to inmate requests for medical treatment and monitoring the health and welfare of all inmates as assigned;
rendering emergency first aid as required; inspecting conditions of locks, window bars, grills, doors, and gates at Correctional facilities to ensure security and help prevent escapes; responding to an escape or attempted escape by sealing off potential escape routes and use the minimum amount of force required to stop the escapee(s) while maintaining control and custody of other inmates; breaking up fights among inmates and restraining disorderly inmates;
using appropriate self-defense tactics to deflect assault by inmates; driving passenger vehicles and trucks used to transport inmates to other institutions, courtrooms, hospitals, and work sites; administering CPR and first aid. Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum education and training includes graduation from high school or an equivalent program. Minimum qualifications and standards required include a valid Florida driver's license and certification from a Department of Law Enforcement Police Standards and Training Commission as a Corrections Officer.
Physical demands include frequent stooping and bending required, as well as manual dexterity, fine motor skills, and the ability to grasp objects. Position requires color perception. Requires the ability to see, hear, and speak. Incumbent must be able to defend themselves, defend others, or otherwise gain control of a physically resistant inmate. Work environment includes varied, eight-hour shifts, many of which include nighttime and weekend work.
Work is performed in controlled and occasionally high-stress environment. During natural disasters, major accident scenes, or major crime scenes, the jobholder may be required to be on scene to assist in anyway with both Sheriff's Office personnel and victims. The type and amount of assistance will be at the discretion of the officer in charge at the scene. Removal can be with or without fault of the jobholder or the agency.
