Animal Control Officer

An Animal Control Officer is a highly responsible position requiring analytical ability, common sense and intelligence. Work is generally performed in accordance with established policies and procedures, but in emergencies or unusual circumstances, sound judgment and initiative are needed to take effective action. Specific duties and responsibilities essential functions include:
Answering inquiries regarding laws and legal procedures, checking on the welfare of animals, issuing citations and conducting follow-up work. The duties of the Animal Control Officer include, but are not limited to:
Taking calls for service, compiling animal related statistical data, conducting animal control property inventories and investigating violations of animal ordinance statutes. The Animal Control Officer shall also perform related duties as assigned by superiors.

Physical demands include the ability to perceive movement and depth of field, detect smells, discern most colors and have manual and finger dexterity. Flexibility is important because of the need frequently to enter and exit vehicles, inspect property, climb over and around obstacles, suddenly move out of the way of dangers, etc. Mental alertness is very important because of the need to make fine discriminations and decisions concerning subtle cues of impending danger or to discover inconsistencies in witnesses or suspects' testimonies, etc.

Physical and mental demands may change dramatically within a few seconds and tax the maximum of human endurance. Therefore, incumbents must maintain a physical and mental state of fitness and readiness that will enable them to handle (with minimal force and often without backup) recurrent contacts and involvements with dangerous and potentially dangerous animals.

Typical qualifications include:
High School Diploma or GED and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work environment may vary. The majority of tasks are performed outdoors while working from a vehicle. Removal can be with or without fault of the jobholder or the agency. Appointment is at the will of the Sheriff. Economic conditions that cause reductions in work force, the member's inability to attend regularly to work, chronic illness, and a failure to perform competently on any of the critical tasks of the position or a consistent failure to perform competently on regular tasks are among the major reasons for job removal without fault.

Failure to support the agency's missions uphold the oath of office, behave in a manner that supports the Sheriff's Office Code of Conduct, continually comply with preconditions for original employment, or to display due regard for the civil liberties of any persons will lead to removal with or without fault. In addition, accruing atypical amounts of dysfunctional work time or requiring atypical amounts of supervisory counseling or remedial training will lead to removal with or without fault.
