Coastal Wave Model Development
The candidate's work will involve the development of the wave model WAVEWATCH III® for operational coastal wave forecast systems, the addition of guidance products characterizing dangerous seas, and testing and evaluating system performance.
ResponsibilitiesThe candidate will perform the job duties in an independent, collaborative, and initiative way, applying innovative methods for the primary work areas. The candidate will work with others on wave forecast system improvements and for transition-to-operations, and will also work with external collaborators to develop and improve the coastal wave models within the Unified Forecast System (UFS) framework.
RequirementsDemonstrated knowledges, skills and abilities in the following areas:
Required:
- Expert knowledge of spectral wave models, in particular for coastal applications.
- Experience in running numerical models on High Performing Computer (HPC) platforms using MPI, OpenMP, Slurm, LSF, etc.
- Is familiar with modern software development practices, particularly version control software.
- Advanced skills and knowledge of modern programming languages and object-oriented languages, such as FORTRAN
90 and Python. - Experience working in a UNIX environment with advanced shell scripting languages and familiar with running complex jobs.
Desired:
- Experience with developing parameterizations for coastal wave processes.
- Experience in model evaluation, data post-processing and statistical analysis including accuracy and uncertainty analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a team environment and communicate effectively using good oral and written communication skills
