Job Title

Summary of Responsibilities Include

Oversee and execute all analytical requirements in support of continuously monitored water quality instrumentation in the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie Estuary.

Responsible for IRLON instrument field validation activities, including, but not limited to the collection of discrete samples and side-by-side comparison with Sea-Bird CTD and YSI handheld sonde following IRLON SOPs

Perform laboratory validation analyses including, but not limited to:

  • Chlorophyll – spectrophotometric and fluorometric
  • Phycobilins – fluorometric
  • pH – spectrophotometric
  • Total alkalinity – open-cell titration
  • Dissolved oxygen – Winkler titration
  • Turbidity – EPA 180.1
  • CDOM – fluorometric

Responsible for supervising all aspects of the QA/QC in the laboratory and that all requirements are met, and documentation related to the analyses is completely and accurately reported.

Responsible for coordinating with contract laboratories and auditing data for FDEP compliance

Performs validation and verification of data before the report is sent to the IRLON Manager.

General laboratory tasks such as chemical inventory management, glassware cleaning, ordering supplies, and maintaining an orderly, clean, and safe laboratory space.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry or related area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience with water quality analysis required.
  • Extensive knowledge of chemistry and biology, state and federal laws and regulations regarding water quality analysis, laboratory principles, practices, procedures, equipment and materials, laboratory safety and hazard communication, proper labeling, use, storage, and disposal of chemicals; able to work off of a small boat in various types of weather required.
  • Must be a motivated self-starter, capable of working independently as well as in a team environment required.
  • Must be able to work early morning and/or evening hours in addition to regular work hours as required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Proficiency performing laboratory analyses according to standard operating procedures and make comparisons and inferences from data, collect samples, and maintain their integrity, read and interpret technical and operational manuals, guidelines and diagrams preferred.
  • Ability to maintain laboratory equipment and instruments and evaluate situations that depart from expected behavior or results and initiate corrective actions preferred.
