Ocean Career: CSA Ocean Sciences Project Scientist

CSA Project Position

The successful applicant will be involved in all aspects of CSA projects including field surveys (including scientific diving), equipment maintenance, small boat operations, data management and analysis, scientific reporting, contributing to proposal writing, project support, and client interaction. An understanding of field sampling in the marine environment with benthic marine flora and fauna identification skills is recommended. The successful applicant must have strong organizational and teamwork skills.

This position requires periodic domestic and international travel, often at short notice and at weekends, during all times of the year, during both daytime and nighttime shifts if at sea, and potentially for prolonged periods (several weeks).

Supporting team science across disciplines and teams

Supporting the quality, validity, and accuracy of project science

Participating both nearshore and intermittent offshore sampling surveys, potentially international and sometimes with prolonged deployment, often at sea both day and night

Lead and assist with data collection by conducting field surveys including measurements, recording data, and collecting quantitative video and still photographs

Leading and assisting in data analysis and preparation of technical reports and proposals

Contributing to the maintenance of positive client interactions

Adhering to company standards and procedures for scientific diving, data collection, quality control, and health, safety, security, and the environment (HSSE)

Being accountable and responsible for personal safety and safety of others

Attending safety meetings and satisfactory completion of assigned training and safety meetings as applicable

Other duties as assigned

M.Sc. in life sciences, or

B.Sc. with at least 5 years' experience, especially marine science, biology and ecology or a related field

Open-water SCUBA certification with scientific diving experience or AAUS certification

Familiarity with ecology of benthic marine and estuarine habitats

Experience with environmental sampling equipment

Experience in working from small vessels or offshore vessels

Demonstrated ability to work independently but also as part of a close-knit team

Excellent organization, written, and oral communication skills

Strong working knowledge of computers and standard Microsoft software packages including word processing skills

Possession of a valid US Driver's license

Advanced open water or rescue diver SCUBA certification(s)

Marine taxonomic identification skills

Experience in vessel mobilization, demobilization, launch and recovery, trailering, operation, handling, and navigation

Experience with statistical methods and packages (e.g., R, SAS)

First Aid, CPR, and O2 administration certifications

Previous health, safety, and/or environmental hazard training

Understanding of data integration using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Experience supporting the development of (successful) scientific funding proposals

Spanish, French or other language skills
