Job Duties:
The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture is seeking a motivated, self-driven, and skilled candidate to join its well-established rice breeding program. The individual will provide support and assist the senior breeder focusing on the development of rice varieties of all market classes and herbicide technologies for Arkansas and beyond. Supporting and assisting the senior rice breeder in adopting the latest technologies in the breeding program, which include genomic selection/prediction, high-throughput phenotyping, and AI.
Supporting the senior rice breeder in managing all aspects of a high-performing rice breeding program, including germplasm management, crossing, selection and re-selection, advancement, yield trials, seed increase, and purification.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: assisting in the integration of the latest tools and technologies into the breeding program, developing and selecting breeding populations, data collection and analysis using appropriate statistical tools, and preparing manuscripts for refereed journals and/or non-refereed publications. The employee must be able to perform physical work such as lifting a minimum of 50 pounds and working in the rice field during growing season.
Seasonal travel to off-station test sites and Puerto Rico winter nursery will be required. Continuation of this position is contingent upon job performance and availability of funding. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
* Ph.D. degree in plant breeding and genetics or closely related fields
* Familiar with genomic selection concepts and applications
* Experience in collecting and analyzing field trial data
* Experience in marker-assisted selection
* Effective communication skills and a good team player
* A record of preparation and submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed scientific journals
* Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Working experience in a plant breeding program
* Proficiency in programming languages such as R and Python
* Familiar with bioinformatics tools
* Experience in analyzing genomic data
